Xiao Huang
Xiao Huang is a geographer whose work uses GeoAI and remote sensing to study cities, disasters, natural resources and public health. During high school in Wuhan, he discovered coding and algorithms, then earned a bachelor's degree focused on satellite-image interpretation at Wuhan University's School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering, an M.S. from Georgia Tech and a geography Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina in 2020. He served as an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas from 2020 to 2023 and led a 2022 geospatial study comparing pandemic effects on Black-owned restaurants and restaurants with unreported ownership across 20 U.S. cities. He joined Emory's AI.Humanity Initiative in 2023, coauthored a 2025 paper on open-source LLMs for GeoAI and helped build an AI system that mapped Atlanta's 1972 road network in 2026. In 2026, he received the American Association of Geographers' Glenda Laws Award; as of October 2026, he is an assistant professor in Emory's Department of Environmental Sciences.
