Timeline
-
1981–1987
Engineering degrees in Korea
He earns a B.Eng. in mechanical engineering at Seoul National University in 1981, then an M.Eng. in 1983 and a Ph.D. in 1987 at KAIST.
-
1987–1993
Assistant professor at POSTECH
He joins POSTECH as an assistant professor in 1987 and holds the post through 1993.
-
1993–2000
Promotion and a Berkeley visit
He becomes an associate professor at POSTECH in 1993 and a professor in 2000. He visits the University of California, Berkeley, in 1995–1996.
-
2013–2016
KROS president and IEEE Fellow
He becomes president of the Korea Robotics Society in 2013. IEEE names him a Fellow in 2016 for contributions to robust control theory for mechanical systems.
-
2020
Intelligent diagnostic robot technology
In 2020, POSTECH credits him with leading the development of intelligent robot technology for diagnostic tests using biotechnology.
-
2022
Bioprinting artificial organs
In 2022, he leads a POSTECH team selected for Korea's Alchemist Project to develop personalized artificial organs through bioprinting and a robot system that automates the process.
-
2025
A flexible robotic actuator
In 2025, he is part of a POSTECH team that develops a thin, flexible robotic actuator inspired by human muscle proteins. The sheet-like robot moves through tight spaces and manipulates objects.
-
As of October 2026
Robotics Laboratory director
He is a professor of mechanical engineering at POSTECH and directs its Robotics Laboratory. In 2026, the lab lists him as a coauthor of a journal paper on neural-network control for electro-hydraulic actuators.
