Walter Savitch
Walter Savitch was a computer scientist whose research spanned computational complexity and computational linguistics. He did undergraduate work at the University of New Hampshire, earned a mathematics PhD under Stephen Cook at UC Berkeley, and joined UC San Diego in 1969. His work included a 1970 theorem on simulating nondeterministic space, research on natural-language reduplication, a 1987 book on language complexity, and introductory Java and C++ textbooks. He directed UC San Diego’s Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Science for over ten years, helped the university establish a Cognitive Science department, and died in 2021.
Timeline
-
1969
A PhD and UCSD faculty post
He does undergraduate work at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. In 1969, he earns a mathematics PhD at UC Berkeley under Stephen Cook and joins UC San Diego’s Applied Physics and Information Science (APIS) Department.
-
1970
Savitch’s space theorem
In 1970, he publishes Relationships between nondeterministic and deterministic tape complexities in the Journal of Computer and System Sciences. The theorem shows that a nondeterministic Turing machine using space S can be simulated by a deterministic machine using S² space.
-
1987
The formal complexity of natural language
In 1987, he co-edits The Formal Complexity of Natural Language with E. Bach, W. Marsh, and G. Safran-Naveh, a D. Reidel volume on natural-language complexity.
-
1989
A model for reduplication
In 1989, he publishes A Formal Model for Context-Free Languages Augmented with Reduplication in Computational Linguistics. The paper models context-free languages with reduplication, a topic in his formal computational linguistics work.
-
2002
Java and C++ textbooks
In 2002, he publishes the second edition of Java: An Introduction to Computer Science Programming and Absolute C++.
-
By 2021
Directing Cognitive Science
By 2021, he directs UC San Diego’s Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Science, a role he holds for over ten years. Its associated students and faculty go on to make UC San Diego one of the first campuses to establish Cognitive Science as an academic department.
-
2021
Death at UC San Diego
He dies on February 1, 2021, as a professor emeritus of Computer Science and Engineering at UC San Diego.
