Researcher

Valentino Braitenberg

Valentino Braitenberg was a neuroscientist and cyberneticist whose research ranged from neuroanatomy and brain theory to artificial intelligence. He studied medicine, neurology and psychiatry in Innsbruck and Rome, met cybernetics researchers during research stays that reached Yale, and taught cybernetics in Naples before co-founding and co-directing the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen. His books On the Texture of Brains and Vehicles present a cybernetic approach to neuroanatomy and show how simple sensor-and-motor machines can produce behavior that people read as emotion. At the University of Trento, he directed the Laboratory of Cognitive Sciences in Rovereto and organized a cybernetics exhibition in 2006. He died in Tübingen in 2011.

Timeline

  1. 1945–1957

    Medicine and research stays

From 1945 to 1954, he studies medicine, neurology and psychiatry in Innsbruck and Rome. Research stays between 1952 and 1957 take him to Oskar Vogt's Institute for Brain Research in Neustadt, Karl Kleist in Frankfurt and Yale Medical School, where he meets cybernetics researchers Wiener, McCulloch and von Foerster.

  2. 1958–1968

    Cybernetics at Naples

In 1958, he returns to Italy and, with E. R. Caianiello, sets up the cybernetics department at the University of Naples's Institute for Theoretical Physics, where he teaches cybernetics for ten years. In 1963, he earns his habilitation in cybernetics and information theory and becomes director of the Department of Biocybernetics at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Naples.

  3. 1968–1994

    Directing natural nerve nets

In 1968, he co-founds the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen and becomes a co-director alongside Karl Götz and Kuno Kirschfeld; Werner Reichardt establishes the institute and appoints the three as co-directors. He leads its Structure and Function of Natural Nerve-Nets department until 1994, combining neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with brain theory to study fly vision, the cerebellum, movement physiology and the cerebral cortex.

  4. 1977

    On the texture of brains

In 1977, he publishes the English edition of On the Texture of Brains, presenting his cybernetic approach to neuroanatomy.

  5. 1984

    Vehicles and synthetic psychology

In 1984, he publishes Vehicles, an unconventional approach to artificial intelligence built around hypothetical vehicles with sensors and motors. Their reactions to outside stimuli can look like fear, love, aggression or sympathy.

  6. 1994–2001

    Cognitive science in Rovereto

After retiring from Max Planck in 1994, he continues research in Tübingen and Italy. From 1998 to 2001, he directs the University of Trento's Laboratory of Cognitive Sciences in Rovereto; the city makes him an honorary citizen in 2001.

  7. 2006

    A public cybernetics exhibition

In 2006, he organizes a public exhibition on cybernetics in Rovereto with Norbert Gutweniger, titled Il cervello e le idee: segnali e messaggi (The Brain and Ideas: Signals and Messages).

  8. 2011

    Death in Tübingen

He dies in Tübingen in September 2011 at age 85.
