Tamas Sziranyi
Also known as Tamás Szirányi
Tamás Szirányi is a researcher in machine perception and pattern recognition who heads the Machine Perception Research Laboratory at HUN-REN SZTAKI. He received his Ph.D. from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1991, joined its Institute for Computer Science and Control in 1992, and became a professor at Pannon University in Veszprém in 2001. In 2008, the International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow for stochastic models and learning methods for video event analysis and for energy optimization-based image and video segmentation. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him a Corresponding Member in 2022. His laboratory works on autonomous vehicle sensing and LIDAR data analysis, and he is an elected member of ELLIS.

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest awards him a Ph.D. in 1991 and a D.Sci. in 2001.
-
1992–2006
Research scientist at SZTAKI
In 1992, he becomes a research scientist at the Institute for Computer Science and Control (MTA SZTAKI) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 2006, he becomes head of the laboratory there that was earlier the Distributed Events Analysis Research Laboratory, now the Machine Perception Research Laboratory.
-
1997–2009
Society president and journal editor
He founds the Hungarian Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society and serves as its president from 1997 to 2002. From 2003 to 2009, he is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing.
-
2001
Professor at Pannon University
In 2001, he is appointed full professor at Pannon University in Veszprém. The Image Processing Research Laboratory there, which he established in the 1990s, covers image recognition and segmentation and video and motion analysis, and its results include hidden Markov models for video segmentation and unusual event detection.

2001–2011
Master Professor and Széchenyi honours
He wins a Master Professor award in 2001. In 2011, he receives the Széchenyi professorship and the ProScientia (Veszprém) award.
-
2008
IAPR Fellow for video analysis
The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2008 for contributions to stochastic models and learning methods for video event analysis, and to energy optimization-based image and video segmentation. In 2015, the IAPR newsletter publishes an interview with him about his fellowship and his research on video event analysis.
