Solomon Marcus
Solomon Marcus was a mathematician whose work spanned mathematical linguistics, theoretical computer science and semiotics. At the University of Bucharest, he studied mathematics, earned a doctorate in 1956 and became a professor emeritus. His books include a 1963 study of mathematical models in linguistics and a 1964 work on grammars and finite automata. A 1974 article applied linguistic and formal-language theory to DNA biochemistry. He served as vice president of the International Association of Semiotics from 1989 to 1999, received the Order of the Star of Romania in 2015 and died in 2016.
