Cristian Sminchisescu
Cristian Sminchisescu is a computer vision and machine learning researcher whose work connects image segmentation, robot vision, and 3D human motion. His 2002 doctoral thesis studied human modeling and motion from monocular video, and he later held faculty posts in Chicago and Bonn. By 2020, he was a professor at Lund and a research scientist at Google; his CPMC system tackled object segmentation, and his SEED project focused on robot vision. His deep learning work on graph matching received a CVPR 2018 award mention, and he served as General Chair for CVPR 2025. As of October 2026, he is an Engineering Manager at Google DeepMind and a professor at Lund University and the Romanian Academy.

Timeline
-
2002
A thesis on human motion
His 2002 PhD thesis, “Estimation algorithms for ambiguous visual models,” studies 3D human modeling and motion reconstruction in monocular video.
-
2004–2007
Faculty posts in Chicago and Bonn
From 2004 to 2007, he is a faculty member at the Toyota Technological Institute at the University of Chicago. He later joins the faculty of the Institute for Numerical Simulation in Bonn University's Mathematics Department.
-
2010
CPMC for object segmentation
In 2010, he coauthors CPMC for automatic object segmentation. The method uses foreground seeds on an image grid, solves constrained parametric min-cut problems, and ranks segments by appearance and shape features.
-
2014
An ERC grant for robot vision
The ERC awards him a 2014 Consolidator Grant of €2 million for SEED. The project aims to give robots a mathematical model for interpreting visual scenes and anticipating what may happen next.
-
2018
Deep learning for graph matching
His work on deep learning for graph matching receives a Best Paper Award Honorable Mention at CVPR 2018.
-
By 2020
Google research and Lund faculty
By 2020, he is a Research Scientist leading a team at Google and a professor at Lund University. His research focuses on computer vision, including 3D human sensing, reconstruction, and recognition.
-
2025
CVPR General Chair
In 2025, he is a General Chair for CVPR alongside Ce Liu and Bryan Morse.
-
As of October 2026
DeepMind and university roles
As of October 2026, he is an Engineering Manager at Google DeepMind and a Professor at the Romanian Academy and Lund University.
