Researcher

Simon Birrell

Simon Birrell is a researcher whose AI work spans ambient intelligence, agricultural robotics and robot control. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1988 with a degree in Natural Sciences, served as CTO of Realidad Virtual S.L. from 1993 to 1995, and helped coin “ambient intelligence” with Eli Zelkha in 1998. At Cambridge, he pursued an AI and robotics PhD based on the Vegebot, a lettuce harvester that used machine learning and passed field tests in 2019; his 2022 work studied differential extrinsic plasticity for robot-arm control. Since September 2023, he has been a director of RobotLux Ltd.

Timeline

  1. 1988

    Natural Sciences at Cambridge

He graduates from Cambridge University with a degree in Natural Sciences in 1988.

  2. 1993–1995

    CTO at Realidad Virtual

From 1993 to 1995, he serves as chief technology officer of Realidad Virtual S.L., an early virtual-reality company in Spain.

  3. 1998

    Coining ambient intelligence

In 1998, he helps develop the ambient-intelligence concept at Palo Alto Ventures and coins the term with Eli Zelkha.

  4. 2016

    Starting the Vegebot

The Vegebot project begins in 2016 as a collaboration between Cambridge’s Bio-Inspired Robotics Lab and G Growers to build a lettuce-harvesting robot.

  5. March 2017

A PhD in AI and robotics

By March 2017, he is pursuing a PhD in AI and robotics at Cambridge University, with the Vegebot project as its basis.

  6. 2019

    Vegebot field tests

In 2019, he coauthors “A Field Tested Robotic Harvesting System for Iceberg Lettuce.” The Vegebot uses a machine-learning algorithm to identify lettuce and passes field tests with G’s Growers.

  7. 2022

    Robot-arm plasticity control

In 2022, he tests whether short-circuited Differential Extrinsic Plasticity can generate trajectories in a robot arm, including target-reaching and circular motions.

  8. September 2023–October 2026

    Director at RobotLux

In September 2023, he becomes a director of RobotLux Ltd. By June 2024, he serves as RobotLux's UK representative and remains active as a director in October 2026.
