Shelia Guberman
Shelia Guberman is a scientist who brought pattern recognition and Gestalt ideas to geology, handwriting recognition and the study of perception. Israel Gelfand invited Guberman in 1966 to lead the Artificial Intelligence team at the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics in Moscow, and a 1986 map of the Andes from that team forecast giant oil and gas fields at eleven undeveloped sites; every giant field found there since lies in an area the map marked as promising. Guberman was chief scientist at ParaGraph International from 1989 to 1997, and handwriting recognition products built on the approach of treating script as stylus movements were licensed by Apple, Microsoft, Boeing and Siemens. Papers from 2001 to 2018 tied Gestalt psychology to artificial intelligence, among them a 2017 Frontiers in Psychology article that proposed an imitation principle of perception. A paper published in March 2026, On Systems Communicability, extended that principle to speech, handwriting and visual forms.

Timeline
-
1947–1971
Radio engineering and two doctorates
Guberman studies radio engineering at the Institute of Electrical Communications in Odessa from 1947 to 1952, then works as a field geophysicist in the Soviet oil industry until 1958. After postgraduate study at the Oil and Gas Institute in Moscow from 1958 to 1961, a PhD in nuclear physics follows in 1962, the year Guberman writes the first applied pattern recognition program. A PhD in applied mathematics comes in 1971.

1966–1991
AI team at the Keldysh Institute
In 1966, mathematician Israel Gelfand invites Guberman to lead the Artificial Intelligence team at the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics in Moscow, and Guberman is chief scientist there until 1991. Guberman applies pattern recognition to earthquake prediction, oil and gas exploration and medical imaging.
-
1975–1986
D-waves and an Andes oil map
In 1975 Guberman proposes the D-waves theory of Earth seismicity, which separates local stress accumulation from the triggering of earthquakes. In 1986 the team publishes a prognostic map for the Andes, and its pattern recognition step forecasts giant oil or gas fields at eleven undeveloped sites. All six giant fields found in the Andes since 1986 lie in areas the map marked as promising.

1989–1997
Handwriting recognition at ParaGraph
From 1989 to 1997 Guberman is chief scientist at ParaGraph International in Campbell, California, and life in the United States begins in 1992. The handwriting recognition technology Guberman invents treats script as a gesture, the synergy of movements of the stylus. Products that ParaGraph and Parascript build on this approach are licensed by Apple, Microsoft, Boeing and Siemens.
-
1997–2007
Founding Digital Oil Technologies
In 1997 Guberman coauthors "Methodology for Prediction of the Locations of Giant Oil and Gas Reservoirs: Field Results" for the Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Regional Meeting in Long Beach, California. From 1998 to 2007 Guberman is founder and CEO of Digital Oil Technologies in Cupertino, California.
-
2001–2018
Gestalt theory papers for AI
In 2001 Guberman and Wita Wojtkowski publish "Reflections on Max Wertheimer's Productive Thinking: Lessons for Artificial Intelligence" in Gestalt Theory. A 2017 paper in Frontiers in Psychology, "Gestalt Theory Rearranged: Back to Wertheimer," proposes an imitation principle of perception supported by the mirror neurons phenomenon. A 2018 review argues that artificial intelligence would be the most natural ally of Gestalt psychology among the hard sciences, because it tries to imitate perception and decision making.

2022
Modeling Necker cube perception
In 2022 Guberman publishes "Gestalt road to Necker cube perception" in Gestalt Theory. An algorithm based on the imitation principle recognizes the cube in a flat drawing and supports a model of how perception switches between the two possible views.

March 2026
On Systems Communicability
In March 2026 Guberman publishes "On Systems Communicability" in Advances in Social Sciences Research Journal under an affiliation with the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics. The paper argues that recognition of speech, handwriting, visual forms and drawings can be understood as imitation of the processes that generated them.
