Igor B. Gurevich
Also known as Игорь Борисович Гуревич, Igor Gurevich
Igor B. Gurevich is a Moscow researcher in the mathematical theory of image analysis and recognition, a field that automates the extraction of information from images to support decisions such as diagnosis and detection. He presented a descriptive framework for image recognition in 1989, coauthored image algebra work with Yury Zhuravlev in 2002, and made the Descriptive Approach to Image Analysis the main instrument of his research, including image mining papers with Vera Yashina in 2010 and 2015. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2004 for contributions to mathematical theory of image analysis and recognition and for service to IAPR. Today he is deputy editor-in-chief of the journal Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis at the Federal Research Center "Computer Science and Control" of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and in August 2026 he presented eye fundus analysis work at the IMTA X workshop, which he co-chairs.
Timeline
-
1989
The descriptive framework paper
He presents "The Descriptive Framework for an Image Recognition Problem" at the 6th Scandinavian Conference on Image Analysis in Oulu in June 1989.
-
October 1998
Technical chair of PRIA-4-98
In October 1998, he serves as technical chairman of PRIA-4-98, the 4th Russian conference on pattern recognition and image analysis, held in Novosibirsk with Yury Zhuravlev as conference chairman. He represents the Scientific Council "Cybernetics" of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
-
2002
An image algebra with Zhuravlev
With Yury Zhuravlev, he coauthors "An Image Algebra Accepting Image Models and Image Transforms", presented at the Vision, Modeling, and Visualization workshop in Erlangen, Germany, in November 2002.
-
2004
An IAPR Fellowship
The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2004 for contributions to mathematical theory of image analysis and recognition, and for service to IAPR.
-
2007
Descriptive techniques at VISAPP
At the VISAPP 2007 conference, he presents "The Descriptive Techniques for Image Analysis and Recognition", which sets automated image mining as the final goal of his research. Its main instrument is the Descriptive Approach to Image Analysis, which standardizes how image recognition problems and procedures are represented.
-
2010–2015
Image mining papers with Yashina
With Vera Yashina, he introduces the Image Formalization Space at the third Image Mining Theory and Applications (IMTA) workshop in 2010. At IMTA-5 in 2015, they present research at the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow that aims to automate the extraction of information from images to make intelligent decisions such as diagnostics and detection.
-
August 2026
Co-chairing IMTA X
He co-chairs the IMTA workshop with Davide Moroni, Bernd Radig and Vera Yashina. At IMTA X in August 2026, he and Yashina present two papers, including one with Adil Tleubaev on automated analysis of the human eye fundus from optical coherence tomography angiography data.
-
As of October 2026
Deputy editor of PRIA
As of October 2026, he is deputy editor-in-chief of the journal Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis, edited by Igor A. Sokolov. He holds a Dr. Sci. (Eng.) and works at the Federal Research Center "Computer Science and Control" of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
