Richard Craib
Richard Craib builds AI for finance through Numerai, a crowdsourced hedge fund that turns machine-learning predictions into stock trades. Before founding Numerai, he studied pure mathematics at Cornell and worked as a data scientist at an asset-management firm. He introduced Numeraire staking and Signals to reward models and let contributors send predictions from their own datasets. In 2025, Numerai secured expanded investment capacity and funding to grow its AI teams. As of October 2026, he is Numerai's founder and CEO; both tournaments use Unity data, with their planned merger set for January 2027.

Timeline
-
Before 2015
Mathematics and quant finance
He studies pure mathematics at Cornell. Before 2015, he works as a data scientist at an asset-management firm with $15 billion under management, where he helps build machine-learning algorithms for its investment fund.
-
2015
Launching Numerai's model tournament
In 2015, he launches Numerai as a crowdsourced hedge fund where machine-learning specialists build predictive algorithms using encrypted financial data. The fund combines submitted algorithms in its own investment model.
-
2017
Numeraire for model staking
In 2017, Numerai issues Numeraire, distributing one million tokens to 12,000 data scientists. The token lets them stake on machine-learning predictions: successful models return their stake and earn bitcoin on live trades, while Numerai destroys stakes after failed predictions.
-
October 2020
Numerai Signals opens data
In October 2020, Numerai launches Signals for original stock-market predictions built from any dataset. Contributors who stake NMR can qualify for payouts.
-
May 2022
A stake-weighted meta-model
In May 2022, he describes a system where data scientists around the world submit stock predictions to Numerai. The fund takes a stake-weighted average of those predictions and uses a portfolio optimizer to make trades.
-
August 2025
JPMorgan capacity for Numerai
In August 2025, Numerai secures $500 million in capacity from JPMorgan Asset Management. It scales its team with an AI researcher formerly at Meta and a trading engineer formerly at Voleon.
-
November 2025
A $30 million Series C
In November 2025, Numerai raises $30 million in a Series C at a $500 million valuation, led by university endowments. The company expands its AI engineering and research teams to support growth.
-
As of October 2026
Founder and CEO at Numerai
As of October 2026, he is Numerai's founder and CEO. In October 2026, he announces Unity, a 1,040-feature dataset with real stock identifiers for Numerai and Signals. Numerai is building research pipelines in which agents source features, generate predictions, stake and learn from market feedback. Both tournaments use Unity data and remain separate until their planned merger on January 1, 2027.
