Ramprasaath R. Selvaraju
Also known as Ramprasaath Ramasamy Selvaraju, Ramprasaath Selvaraju
Ramprasaath Selvaraju is a computer vision researcher best known as first author of Grad-CAM, a technique that shows which image regions drive a neural network's prediction. He studied electrical engineering and physics at BITS Pilani in India and completed a PhD at Georgia Tech in 2020, advised by Devi Parikh and Dhruv Batra. Grad-CAM appeared at ICCV 2017, and during his years at Salesforce Research from 2020 to 2022 he was second author of the ALBEF vision-language model in 2021. He was a founding member of Artera AI from 2022 to 2023, and the 2022 AMiner AI 2000 list placed him among the top 100 scholars in computer vision. Since May 2023, he is a senior researcher at Apple working on machine learning for Apple Vision Pro.
Timeline
-
2010–2015
Physics and engineering at BITS Pilani
He studies at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS-Pilani) in Hyderabad, India, and earns a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical & Electronics Engineering and a Master of Science in Physics in 2015. During 2013 he interns at Brown University with Benjamin Kimia on a vision-based indoor navigation system for visually impaired people, and in 2014 he works at Oxford University with Philip H. S. Torr and Stephen Hicks on augmented-reality systems for visually impaired users.
-
2015–2020
A Georgia Tech doctorate
He works as a research assistant in the Visual Intelligence Lab at Georgia Tech, advised by Devi Parikh and Dhruv Batra, on AI systems that are interpretable, transparent and unbiased. He earns his Computer Science PhD in 2020 with the thesis Explaining model decisions and fixing them via human feedback.
-
2017
Grad-CAM at ICCV
He is first author of Grad-CAM, published at ICCV 2017 with Michael Cogswell, Abhishek Das, Ramakrishna Vedantam, Devi Parikh and Dhruv Batra. The method uses the gradients of a target concept flowing into the final convolutional layer to produce a coarse localization map of the image regions that matter, and it applies to image classification, captioning and visual question answering models. An extended version appears in the International Journal of Computer Vision in 2019.
-
June 2020–February 2022
Senior scientist at Salesforce Research
He joins Salesforce Research in Palo Alto as a Senior Research Scientist in June 2020 and works at the intersection of large-scale multimodal representation learning and explainability. He holds the role until February 2022.
-
2021
The ALBEF vision-language model
In July 2021, he is second author of Align before Fuse (ALBEF), with Junnan Li, Akhilesh Deepak Gotmare, Shafiq Joty, Caiming Xiong and Steven Hoi. The method adds a contrastive loss that aligns image and text representations before cross-modal attention fuses them, and uses momentum distillation to learn from noisy web data. ALBEF reaches absolute gains of 2.37% on VQA and 3.84% on NLVR2 over the previous state of the art.
-
February 2022–March 2023
Founding member at Artera AI
He joins Artera AI in Los Altos as a founding member in February 2022 and leads research and development of AI solutions for precision medicine until March 2023.
-
2022
AMiner AI 2000 in computer vision
He is recognized among the top 100 scholars in the AMiner 2022 AI 2000 list of most influential scholars in Computer Vision for 2012–2021.
-
Since May 2023
Senior researcher at Apple
He joins Apple as a Senior Researcher in May 2023 and works on machine learning for Apple Vision Pro. He is a Senior Research Scientist at Apple specializing in computer vision.
