Caiming Xiong

Caiming Xiong is an AI researcher whose work spans neural question answering, language models, multimodal AI, agents and contextual forecasting. He earned a computer science and engineering PhD in the University at Buffalo's Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 2014 and won an Outstanding Paper Award at ACL in 2019. By November 2020, he was Managing Director of AI Research at Salesforce. His work includes Dynamic Memory Networks, CodeGen, BLIP, xLAM and xGen-small; he contributed insights to a January 2026 article about MoiraiAgent. As of October 2026, he is a co-founder of Recursive Superintelligence, whose team builds systems that conduct experiments to improve their own AI capabilities.

Timeline

  1. 2014

    A computer science PhD

He earns a PhD in the University at Buffalo's Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 2014.

  2. 2016

    Dynamic memory networks

In 2016, he coauthors Dynamic Memory Networks for Visual and Textual Question Answering. The model adds an image input module for visual questions and improves performance on the Visual Question Answering and bAbI-10k text question-answering datasets.

  3. 2019–2020

    An ACL paper award

He wins an Outstanding Paper Award at ACL in 2019. By November 2020, he is Managing Director of AI Research at Salesforce.

  4. 2022

    CodeGen and BLIP

In 2022, he coauthors CodeGen, an open family of large language models for program synthesis that competes on zero-shot Python code generation on HumanEval. In 2022, he also coauthors BLIP, a framework for vision-language understanding and generation that bootstraps image captions.

  5. September 2024

    xLAM for AI agents

In September 2024, he coauthors xLAM, a family of large language models optimized for function calling and AI agents.

  6. May 2025

    The xGen-small models

In May 2025, he coauthors xGen-small, a compact language model family with 4B and 9B parameter versions and long-context support.

  7. January 2026

    MoiraiAgent forecasts with context

In January 2026, he contributes insights to a Salesforce article about MoiraiAgent, an automated time-series forecasting framework that combines historical values with contextual signals.

  8. As of October 2026

    Co-founding Recursive

As of October 2026, he is a co-founder of Recursive Superintelligence, whose team builds systems that conduct experiments to improve their own AI capabilities.
