Qingshan Liu
Also known as Liu Qingshan, 刘青山
Qingshan Liu is a computer vision researcher whose work spans image and video analysis, remote sensing, and machine learning. He earned Auto-Control degrees at Chinese Textile University and Southeast University before completing a doctorate in pattern recognition at CAS's National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition in 2003. His career took him through CAS, CUHK, and Rutgers before he joined NUIST as professor and dean. He coauthored papers on facial landmark localization and unsupervised video object segmentation, and IAPR named him a Fellow in 2024 for contributions to computer vision and pattern recognition. He is a Vice President at NJUPT and attended the university's December 2025 closing ceremony for a joint program with Sinopec Nanjing Engineering Corporation.

Timeline
-
1997–2000
Automation degrees in Shanghai and Nanjing
In July 1997, he earns a B.Sc. in Auto-Control at Chinese Textile University, now Dong-Hua University, in Shanghai. In March 2000, he earns an M.Sc. in Auto-Control in the Department of Automation at Southeast University.
-
2000–2003
A doctorate in pattern recognition
At CAS's National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, he completes a Ph.D. in Pattern Recognition and Intelligence System in April 2003 under Professor Songde Ma.
-
2003–2011
Research at CAS, CUHK and Rutgers
He works at CAS's National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition from April 2003 to November 2008. In 2004–2005, he serves as an associate researcher at the Multimedia Laboratory of The Chinese University of Hong Kong; from April 2006 to August 2011, he works in Rutgers University's Computer Science Department with Professor Metaxas.
-
2011
Professor and dean at NUIST
In September 2011, he joins NUIST as Professor and Dean of its School of Computer Science. His research includes image and video analysis, remote sensing image analysis, and machine learning.
-
2017
The Stacked Hourglass Network
In 2017, he coauthors Stacked Hourglass Network for Robust Facial Landmark Localisation. The network uses a supervised face transformation to reduce translation, scale, and rotation variation, then applies a deep convolutional model for landmark regression.
-
2021
Unsupervised video segmentation
In 2021, he coauthors Deep Transport Network for Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation at ICCV. It uses optimal structural matching to align RGB and optical-flow features while suppressing distracting signals.
-
2024
An IAPR fellowship
He becomes an IAPR Fellow in 2024 for contributions to computer vision and pattern recognition.
-
Since May 2023
Vice President at NJUPT
In May 2023, he joins NJUPT's Standing CPC Council as Vice President. In December 2025, he attends the university's joint-program closing ceremony with Sinopec Nanjing Engineering Corporation as Vice President. He remains NJUPT's Vice President in 2026.
