    Degrees and handwriting research

He earns a doctorate in chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis in 2001 and a master's degree in computer science there in 2002. He holds a bachelor's degree from Peking University and works on East Asian handwriting recognition for the Tablet PC by 2006.

  2. 2021

    AdsGNN for sponsored search

In 2021, he coauthors AdsGNN, which fuses ad text with user behavior graphs to model relevance in sponsored search.

  3. 2022

Bing ads and Neural Corpus Indexer

In 2022, he coauthors a self-supervised augmentation and generation framework for multilingual text ads at Bing. He also coauthors Neural Corpus Indexer (NCI), a sequence-to-sequence model that generates relevant document identifiers directly for queries and receives the NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award in 2022.

  4. 2023

    One Person Entrepreneur model

In 2023, he introduces the One Person Entrepreneur (OPE) concept and the model “One Person + AI = a Team” to advance AI-native organizations.

  5. 2023

    Auto Search Indexer and MEVI

In 2023, he coauthors Auto Search Indexer (ASI), which learns document identifiers and retrieves documents with a generative model. He also coauthors Model-enhanced Vector Index (MEVI), which connects generative retrieval with embedding-based search.

  6. 2024

    OneSparse for vector search

In 2024, he coauthors OneSparse, a multi-index system for vector search in multimodal hybrid vector spaces. Microsoft integrates it into online web search and advertising systems.
