Pramod Varshney
Also known as Pramod K. Varshney
Pramod Varshney is a Syracuse University researcher whose work spans distributed detection, data fusion and machine learning. He earned degrees at Illinois and joined Syracuse University in 1976. He published Distributed Detection and Data Fusion in 1997, became an IEEE Fellow, and led CASE from 2009 to 2023. In 2018, he coauthored a paper on machine-learning interpretability; from 2021 to 2023, he received IEEE and Syracuse honors, and in 2025 he helped establish an endowed faculty fellowship. As of October 2026, he advises student research on distributed sensor networks at Syracuse.

Timeline
-
1972–1976
Degrees at Illinois
At Illinois, he earns a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science in 1972, an M.S. in electrical engineering in 1974, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1976 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
-
1976–1996
Professor at Syracuse
He joins Syracuse University in 1976 and serves as associate chair of its electrical engineering and computer science department from 1993 to 1996.
-
1997
A book and IEEE Fellowship
In 1997, he publishes Distributed Detection and Data Fusion and becomes an IEEE Fellow for contributions to distributed detection and data fusion.
-
2009–2023
Leading CASE
From 2009 to 2023, he leads Syracuse's Center for Advanced Systems and Engineering (CASE) as executive director, moving university expertise into New York's high-tech economy.
-
2018–2023
Why Interpretability in Machine Learning
In 2018, he coauthors “Why Interpretability in Machine Learning? An Answer Using Distributed Detection and Data Fusion Theory,” which connects model interpretability to distributed detection and data-fusion theory. He also recognizes the importance of machine-learning models and algorithms as deployed sensors generate vast amounts of data.
-
2021–2023
IEEE and Syracuse honors
He receives the IEEE AESS Pioneer Award in 2021. In 2022, the IEEE Signal Processing Society honors him with the Claude Shannon-Harry Nyquist Technical Achievement Award for contributions to distributed inference and data fusion. Syracuse University gives him its Chancellor's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.
-
April 2025
Endowed faculty fellowship
In April 2025, he and Anju establish the Pramod and Anju Varshney Endowed Faculty Fellowship for a full-time EECS scholar focused on research and doctoral-student mentorship.
-
As of October 2026
Advising sensor-network research
At Syracuse's 2026 Engineering and Computer Science Research Day, he advises a student project on efficient uplink communication in distributed sensor networks.
