Peter Struss

Peter Struss is a computer scientist who works on model-based diagnosis, in which a program reasons from an explicit model of a device to find out why it fails. He studied mathematics at Göttingen, earned a computer science PhD at Kaiserslautern, and from 1978 to 1992 was in charge of the knowledge-based systems group in Siemens Corporate R&D. In 1989 he and Oskar Dressler presented GDE+, which added fault models to the General Diagnostic Engine, and in 1992 he became a professor of computer science at the Technical University of Munich, where he headed the Model-based Systems and Qualitative Modeling group. The International Workshop Series on Principles of Diagnosis gave him its first Lifetime Achievements Award in 2014, and he is a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence. Since 2020, he is also an adjunct professor at the Vellore Institute of Technology in Chennai, India.

Timeline

  1. 1978–1992

    Knowledge-based systems at Siemens

He holds a mathematics diploma from the University of Göttingen and a computer science PhD from the University of Kaiserslautern. From 1978 to 1992, he works in Siemens Corporate R&D, where he is in charge of the knowledge-based systems group, with several research stays at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley.

  2. 1989–1990

    Extending the General Diagnostic Engine

In 1989, he and Oskar Dressler present GDE+ at IJCAI, a system that adds fault models to the General Diagnostic Engine. His 1990 paper "New techniques in model-based diagnosis" reports case studies from the Advanced Reasoning Methods group at Siemens and describes extensions to GDE for devices with many components, behavior over time, multiple tests and uncertain measurements.

  3. 1992

    Professor at TU Munich

He joins the Technical University of Munich in 1992 as a Professor of Computer Science and heads the Model-based Systems and Qualitative Modeling (MQM) group. His research covers automated diagnosis, testing and failure-modes-and-effects analysis, together with decision support for ecological and environmental systems. He is a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (formerly ECCAI) and has served as an associate editor of the Artificial Intelligence Journal.

  4. 2012

    A tutorial on model-based diagnosis

At the First European Conference of the Prognostics and Health Management Society in 2012, he presents the tutorial Model Based Diagnosis, which covers consistency-based problem solving, compositional modeling, and industrial applications.

  5. 2013

    Physics-centered fault analysis

His 2013 position paper argues for a physics-centered perspective on testing, fault and safety analysis of systems with embedded software. A case study on failure-modes and effects analysis in the automotive industries illustrates the approach.

  6. 2014

    First Lifetime Achievements Award

The International Workshop Series on Principles of Diagnosis gives him its first Lifetime Achievements Award in 2014.

  7. 2020

    Model-based decision support architecture

In 2020, he publishes a paper in the IEA/AIE 2020 proceedings that outlines a general architecture for intelligent decision support systems and extends consistency-based diagnosis to process-oriented models. A second 2020 paper in the same proceedings covers AI for health, with knowledge-based generation of tailor-made exercise plans.

  8. Since 2020

    Adjunct professor in Chennai

He is also an adjunct professor at the Vellore Institute of Technology in Chennai, India, since 2020.
