Peter Spirtes
Also known as Peter L. Spirtes
Peter Spirtes is a professor of philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University who helped develop the Tetrad platform for automated causal discovery from statistical data. He earned a PhD in history and philosophy of science and a master's degree in computer science at the University of Pittsburgh, and joined the Carnegie Mellon faculty in 1987. With Clark Glymour and Richard Scheines he wrote Causation, Prediction, and Search in 1993, and he led the effort to prove that the team's causal discovery algorithms are theoretically reliable. Tetrad won a Super Artificial Intelligence Leader award in Shanghai in 2020, and in 2021 he became head of the philosophy department and the first Marianna Brown Dietrich Professor. He is the Marianna Brown Dietrich Professor of Philosophy and a leader of the CMU-CLeaR group on causal learning, and Kevin Zollman succeeded him as department head in September 2026.

Timeline
-
By 1987
Pitt degrees and a CMU post
He earns a PhD in history and philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh and joins the Tetrad project while taking a master's degree in computer science there. In 1987, he becomes a member of the Carnegie Mellon University faculty.
-
1993
Causation, Prediction, and Search
In 1993, he publishes Causation, Prediction, and Search with Clark Glymour and Richard Scheines. He leads the effort to prove that the team's causal discovery algorithms are theoretically reliable.
-
2001
An anytime FCI algorithm
In 2001, he publishes An Anytime Algorithm for Causal Inference in the proceedings of the Eighth International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics. The paper proves that the FCI algorithm, which allows for hidden variables and selection bias, can be interrupted at any stage and still return output that is correct with probability one in the large sample limit.

2014
A big-data causal center
In 2014, Carnegie Mellon's Department of Philosophy partners with the University of Pittsburgh to form the Center for Causal Modeling and Discovery in the Biomedical Sciences, funded by a four-year, $11 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. He is among the department's philosophers working under the center.

2020
A SAIL award for Tetrad
In 2020, the Tetrad Automated Causal Discovery Platform, developed by him with Clark Glymour, Richard Scheines and Joe Ramsey, wins a Super Artificial Intelligence Leader (SAIL) award at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. It is one of four projects chosen from over 800 nominees.
-
2021
Head of CMU philosophy
In 2021, he becomes head of Carnegie Mellon's Department of Philosophy, succeeding David Danks, and is named the first Marianna Brown Dietrich Professor.
-
2025
Teaching AI to ask why
In 2025, he and Kun Zhang lead an interdisciplinary Carnegie Mellon team that is teaching AI to understand the why behind complex problems. Their work on systems that identify causes aims at health care, education and generative AI, and belongs to the Department of Philosophy's CMU-CLeaR group.

As of October 2026
Marianna Brown Dietrich Professor
In September 2026, Kevin Zollman succeeds him as head of the Department of Philosophy. He is the Marianna Brown Dietrich Professor of Philosophy and a leader of the CMU-CLeaR (Causal Learning and Reasoning) group.
