Clark Glymour
Also known as Clark N. Glymour
Clark Glymour is a philosopher of science whose work brought computer search to the problem of finding causal explanations in data. He earned degrees in chemistry and philosophy at the University of New Mexico and a doctorate in history and philosophy of science at Indiana University. At Pittsburgh, he and his students developed automated causal-search methods and the TETRAD project; he founded Carnegie Mellon's Philosophy Department in 1985. His 2001 book The Mind's Arrows applied Bayesian networks to psychology and neuroscience; he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019, and TETRAD received a SAIL award in 2020. As of October 2026, he is Senior Research Scientist emeritus at IHMC and Alumni University Professor of Philosophy emeritus at Carnegie Mellon.

Studying science and philosophy
At the University of New Mexico, he earns bachelor's degrees in chemistry and philosophy and receives a B.A. in 1964. He studies history and philosophy of science at Indiana from 1965 to 1969 and completes a PhD there in 1969.
-
1980s
Searching for causal structure
In the 1980s, he and students Kevin Kelly, Richard Scheines and Peter Spirtes develop automated procedures for causal explanations, later described in Discovering Causal Structure (1987). At Pittsburgh, he starts the TETRAD project while teaching History and Philosophy of Science.

1985
Founding CMU Philosophy
At Carnegie Mellon, he founds the Philosophy Department in 1985.
-
2000
Joining IHMC
At IHMC, he becomes a Senior Research Scientist and John C. Pace, Jr. Eminent Scholar in 2000.
-
2001
Bayesian networks in psychology
The Mind's Arrows appears in 2001 as an account of Bayesian networks for cognitive psychology and neuroscience.
-
