Patrick Siarry
Patrick Siarry is a French engineer and computer scientist who works on metaheuristic optimization, including simulated annealing, evolutionary algorithms, artificial ants and particle swarms, with applications in image processing and the learning of neural networks. Born in France in 1952, he graduated from Supélec in 1977, earned a PhD in computer science and optimization at University Paris VI in 1986, and received his habilitation from University Paris XI in 1994. A professor at Université Paris-Est Créteil since 1995, he coordinated the Springer book Metaheuristics for Hard Optimization in 2005, edited Optimization in Signal and Image Processing in 2009, and directed the French volume Métaheuristiques in 2014. In 2009, he was guest editor of a special issue of Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence on metaheuristics, and in 2020 he was a keynote speaker at IRASET in Meknes, Morocco. He is a professor emeritus at Université Paris-Est Créteil.

Timeline
-
1977–1986
Supélec engineer, Paris VI PhD
Born in France in 1952, he graduates as an engineer from the École Supérieure d'Électricité (Supélec) in 1977. He first works on analog and digital models of nuclear power plants at Électricité de France, and he earns a PhD in computer science and optimization at University Paris VI in 1986.
-
1994–1995
Habilitation and a professorship
He receives the Doctor of Sciences (Habilitation) degree in computer science and optimization from University Paris XI, Orsay, in 1994. From 1995, he is a professor of automatics and informatics at Université Paris-Est Créteil.
-
December 2005
Metaheuristics for hard optimization
Springer publishes Metaheuristics for Hard Optimization in December 2005, a book coordinated by Siarry with Johann Dréo, Alain Pétrowski and Eric Taillard. It presents simulated annealing, tabu search, evolutionary and genetic algorithms and ant colony algorithms, then closes with case studies in telecommunications, air traffic control and vehicle routing.
-
2009
Optimization in signal and image processing
He edits Optimization in Signal and Image Processing, published by ISTE and Wiley in 2009, which covers artificial evolution, Bayesian and Markovian approaches and metaheuristics such as genetic algorithms, ant colony algorithms and particle swarm optimization. In 2009, he is also guest editor of a special issue of Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence on advances in metaheuristics for hard optimization, planned for publication in March 2010.
-
March 2014
Directing the book Métaheuristiques
Eyrolles publishes Métaheuristiques in March 2014, a 524-page volume that he directs. It presents simulated annealing, tabu search, variable neighbourhood search, GRASP, evolutionary algorithms, artificial ants and particle swarms, with contributions from Jean-Marc Alliot, Pierre Hansen, Christian Prins, Éric D. Taillard and others.
-
March 2020
Keynote at IRASET 2020
In March 2020, he is a keynote speaker at IRASET 2020 in Meknes, Morocco, with a talk on adapting discrete metaheuristics to continuous optimization. He heads the Signal and Image Processing team of the Laboratory Images, Signals and Intelligent Systems (LISSI) at UPEC, whose methods have been applied to image processing, computer-aided design of electronic circuits, and the learning of fuzzy rule bases and neural networks.
