Michael Uschold
Also known as Mike Uschold
Michael Uschold is an artificial intelligence researcher who develops methods for building ontologies. He earned degrees in mathematics and physics, computer science, and artificial intelligence, then researched and taught in Edinburgh’s AI department. With colleagues, he coauthored the Enterprise Ontology for business terms and modelling, and applied semantic technology at Boeing and Reinvent. He is a senior ontology consultant at Semantic Arts; in 2018, he published a guide to OWL, and in 2025, he wrote about categorization. As of October 2026, he is an Ontology Fellow there.
Timeline
-
1977–1991
An AI doctorate
He earns a BA in mathematics and physics from Canisius College in 1977, an MS in computer science from Rutgers University, and a PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of Edinburgh in 1991.
-
1983–1995
Research at Edinburgh AI
He joins the University of Edinburgh’s Department of Artificial Intelligence as a researcher and lecturer in 1983, then moves to its Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute. With Martin King, he publishes a 1995 paper that outlines requirements for a method to build ontologies. He co-presents the first tutorial on ontology engineering in the UK in 1995.
-
1996
A review of ontology methods
With Michael Gruninger, he publishes “Ontologies: Principles, Methods and Applications” in the June 1996 issue of The Knowledge Engineering Review. The paper outlines a methodology for developing and evaluating ontologies, including scoping and definition.
-
1997–2008
Boeing and the Enterprise Ontology
He works as a research scientist at Boeing from 1997 to 2008 and applies semantic technology to enterprise challenges. With Martin King, Stuart Moralee and Yannis Zorgios, he publishes The Enterprise Ontology in 1998; it collects business terms and definitions and provides a basis for enterprise modelling methods and tools.
-
2008–2009
Semantic advertising at Reinvent
During 2008–2009, he works at Reinvent on a team that develops a semantic advertising platform that increases revenue.
-
2010–2018
A book about OWL
He joins Semantic Arts as a senior ontology consultant in 2010 and guides clients in semantic technology. In 2018, he publishes Demystifying OWL for the Enterprise, a guide to learning the Web Ontology Language, OWL.
-
March 2025
Buckets and categorization
In March 2025, he publishes “Buckets, Buckets Everywhere: Who Knows What to Think,” an essay about how people categorize and model concepts.
-
As of October 2026
Ontology Fellow at Semantic Arts
As of October 2026, he serves as an Ontology Fellow at Semantic Arts.
