Michael Truell
Michael Truell builds AI tools for coding and software development. He and Benjamin Spector co-created Halite in 2016, and he coauthored a 2021 paper on statistical models. At MIT, he and classmates considered paths into AI in 2021 and started Anysphere in early 2022. Anysphere released Cursor in March 2023; Supermaven joined Cursor in November 2024, and Truell described the move toward coding agents in 2026. SpaceX acquired Cursor in August 2026, and, as of October 2026, he is building SpaceXAI.

Timeline
-
2016–2017
Building Halite
At Two Sigma, he and Ben Spector develop Halite, an AI programming contest where players write bots, in 2016. They publish a 2017 paper on the design of online programming competitions.
-
2021
Brownian motion research
He coauthors a 2021 paper on maximum-likelihood estimation for Brownian motion tree models. He and his MIT classmates consider research in AI, joining a large AI effort, or starting a company.
-
2022
Starting Anysphere
In early 2022, he and three MIT classmates start Anysphere with an AI project for mechanical engineers. They pivot toward tools for software developers.
-
March 2023
Releasing Cursor
His company releases Cursor in March 2023 as an AI coding assistant with its own integrated development environment.
-
November 2024
Supermaven joins Cursor
Supermaven, a fast, context-aware copilot, joins Cursor in November 2024. Together, the teams seek a more useful product with purpose-built models and a tailored editing experience.
-
2026
Building with agents
In February 2026, he describes a move toward cloud agents that tackle larger software tasks independently and run for longer periods. In April 2026, he and Sualeh Asif introduce Cursor 3, a unified workspace for local and cloud agents.
-
2026
TIME100 AI selection
TIME names him to its 2026 TIME100 AI list in the Innovators category as Cursor’s CEO.
-
As of October 2026
Building SpaceXAI
SpaceX acquires Cursor in August 2026. As of October 2026, he is building SpaceXAI to advance useful AI. His earlier work includes statistical math research and LLM-driven recommendation systems.
