Matthew G. Hanna

Also known as Matthew Hanna

Matthew Hanna is a pathologist and pathology informaticist who brings digital pathology and artificial intelligence into routine clinical practice. He trained at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, the University of Pittsburgh and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and by 2020 was Director of Digital Pathology Informatics at Memorial Sloan Kettering. There he coauthored the 2019 paper "Clinical-grade computational pathology using weakly supervised deep learning on whole slide images" and was first author of a 2020 Modern Pathology study that validated remote digital sign-out. The Pathologist put him on its Power List in 2022, the first edition of his book with Meera Hameed, Digital Pathology: Implementation in Clinical Practice with AI Applications, appeared in November 2024, and the College of American Pathologists gave him its 2025 Pathology Advancement Award. He is Vice Chair of Pathology Informatics at UPMC, Director of AI Operations for its Computational Pathology & Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence, and chair of the CAP AI Committee.

Timeline

  1. 2019

    Clinical-grade computational pathology

In 2019, he coauthors "Clinical-grade computational pathology using weakly supervised deep learning on whole slide images" with Gabriele Campanella and others at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The multiple instance learning system trains on reported diagnoses alone, is tested on 44,732 whole slide images from 15,187 patients, and reaches areas under the curve above 0.98 for prostate cancer, basal cell carcinoma and breast cancer metastases to axillary lymph nodes.

  2. By 2020

    Director of digital pathology informatics

By 2020, he is Director of Digital Pathology Informatics and an Assistant Attending of Breast Pathology and Informatics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. His training spans a residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, a pathology informatics fellowship and a Clinical Instructor post at the University of Pittsburgh, and an oncologic pathology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

  3. 2020

    Validating remote digital sign-out

In 2020, he is first author of a Modern Pathology study that validates remote digital sign-out at Memorial Sloan Kettering during the COVID-19 pandemic. Twelve pathologists from nine surgical pathology subspecialties review 108 cases and 1,196 slides remotely, and major diagnostic equivalency between digital and glass slide diagnoses is 100%.

  4. 2022

    The Pathologist Power List

The Pathologist names him to its Power List 2022. His white papers and original research cover machine learning validation, digital pathology operations, telepathology, image analysis and computational pathology.

  5. November 2024

    Digital pathology implementation book

The first edition of Digital Pathology: Implementation in Clinical Practice with AI Applications, by Meera Hameed and him, appears in November 2024. The book gives guidance and tools for digital pathology in a clinical laboratory, from hardware, software and staffing to clinical validation and AI-mediated decision support.

  6. 2025

    CAP Pathology Advancement Award

The College of American Pathologists presents him with its 2025 Pathology Advancement Award for leadership in advancing pathology through digital innovation. As vice chair of pathology informatics at UPMC and senior director of AI Operations at its Computational Pathology and Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence, he oversees digital pathology, clinical deployment of AI, laboratory automation and the laboratory information system.

  7. As of October 2026

    Vice chair of pathology informatics

As of October 2026, he is Vice Chair of Pathology Informatics and Associate Professor of Pathology at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, and Director of AI Operations for the Computational Pathology & Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence. He chairs the CAP AI Committee and is President-Elect of the Digital Pathology Association. In June 2026, he is among the presenters of a SIIM annual meeting session on operationalizing AI in pathology with Ibrahim Abukhiran, Liron Pantanowitz and Hooman Rashidi.
