Liron Pantanowitz
Liron Pantanowitz is a pathologist whose informatics work centers on digital pathology, computational pathology and artificial intelligence for anatomical pathology. He earned his degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, including a PhD on the feasibility of AI in anatomical pathology, and trained at Harvard and Baystate Medical Center before joining UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh in 2010. There he became Vice Chair for Pathology Informatics, served as president of the Association for Pathology Informatics in 2013, co-founded the Journal of Pathology Informatics, and received that association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. After directing anatomic pathology at the University of Michigan from 2020 to 2023, he returned to Pittsburgh as chair of pathology, was named a 2024 Idol of Innovation on The Pathologist Power List, and won the 2025 CAP Pathology Advancement Award. He is the Maud Menten Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh.

By 2010
Training from Witwatersrand to Harvard
He earns a BScHons, a medical degree and a PhD at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, and his PhD examines the feasibility of artificial intelligence in anatomical pathology. He completes his residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard, fellowships in hematopathology at Harvard and cytopathology at Baystate Medical Center, Tufts University, and an MHA at Ohio University, before joining UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh in 2010.

2010–2020
Vice Chair for Pathology Informatics
Pitt recruits him as an associate professor of pathology in 2010, and he becomes Vice Chair for Pathology Informatics and Director of Cytopathology; he is promoted to full professor in 2015. He serves as president of the Association for Pathology Informatics in 2013 and co-founds its journal, the Journal of Pathology Informatics, with Anil Parwani.
-
2019
A Lifetime Achievement Award
The Association for Pathology Informatics presents him with its Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 Pathology Informatics Summit in Pittsburgh. The award honors his work spearheading clinical guidelines that promote the adoption of digital pathology and a national pathology informatics curriculum.
-
2020–2023
Anatomic pathology at Michigan
He joins the University of Michigan in 2020 as A. James French Professor and Director of Anatomic Pathology, in the Department of Pathology and Michigan Medicine Laboratories. He returns to Pittsburgh in 2023.
-
2023
Returning to Pitt as chair
In 2023, he returns to Pitt's School of Medicine and UPMC as chair of pathology, succeeding George Michalopoulos, who held the position for 31 years. The University of Pittsburgh also names him Maud Menten Distinguished Professor in 2023.
-
2024
A Power List Idol of Innovation
The Pathologist names him a 2024 Idol of Innovation on its Power List, alongside Pitt colleague Hooman Rashidi. By then he has focused on pathology informatics for more than two decades and aims to transform clinical services, patient treatment, research and education with AI and computational pathology.

2025
A CAP Pathology Advancement Award
The College of American Pathologists gives him its 2025 Pathology Advancement Award for his contributions to pathology informatics. He contributed to CAP guidelines on validating whole slide imaging for primary diagnosis, which enabled remote sign-out of cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to the American Society of Cytopathology's digital cytology recommendations that helped AI-assisted Pap test screening enter routine clinical use.

As of October 2026
Chair and Menten Professor
He is the Maud Menten Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, with a secondary appointment in biomedical informatics, and an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pathology Informatics. In June 2026, he is among the presenters of a SIIM annual meeting session titled Operationalizing AI in Pathology: Strategy, Governance, and Clinical Integration.
