Mateja Jamnik

Mateja Jamnik is a Cambridge AI professor whose work connects human-like mathematical reasoning, machine learning and explainable AI. She studied mathematics and computer studies at Trent, completed a postgraduate diploma at Cambridge's Wolfson College, and pursued an AI PhD in Edinburgh on diagrammatic proofs. Her 2001 book Mathematical Reasoning with Diagrams describes a formal system for diagrammatic arithmetic; she held research and lecturer roles in Birmingham and Cambridge and advised the House of Lords AI Committee from 2017 to 2018. She founded women@CL, and the Royal Society named her a runner-up for its Athena Prize in 2016. Since October 2019, she is Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Cambridge, where she combines AI reasoning with machine learning for explainable applications, serves on the Home Office Science Advisory Council, and leads work on neural-symbolic reasoning; in 2026, she coauthored a declaration on AI and mathematics.

Timeline

  1. 1991–1995

    Mathematics and computer studies

She earns a Joint Honours BSc in Mathematics and Computer Studies at Trent University from 1991 to 1994, and completes a postgraduate diploma in computer science at Cambridge's Computer Laboratory, Wolfson College, from 1994 to 1995.

  2. 1995–1999

An AI PhD on diagrammatic proofs

She pursues an AI PhD in Edinburgh's Mathematical Reasoning Group from 1995 to 1998 under supervisors Alan Bundy and Ian Green. Her project automates diagrammatic proofs of arithmetic arguments, and her thesis is dated July 1999.

  3. 1998–2002

    A Birmingham research fellowship

She becomes a Research Fellow in the University of Birmingham's School of Computer Science from 1998 to 2002 and works on methods for proof planning in mathematics.

  4. 2001

    Mathematical Reasoning with Diagrams

Her 2001 book describes a semi-automatic proof system called Diamond for diagrammatic reasoning and arithmetic theorems.

  5. 2002–2019

    Cambridge research appointments

She holds Cambridge's EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship in the Computer Laboratory from 2002 to 2012. She serves as University Lecturer from 2003 to 2011, Senior University Lecturer from 2011 to 2017, and Reader in Artificial Intelligence from 2017 to 2019; her fellowship project automates informal human mathematical reasoning.

  6. By 2016

    A Royal Society Athena runner-up

She founds women@CL, a computer science initiative that starts to change culture in computing departments nationwide. The Royal Society names her a runner-up for its 2016 Athena Prize for advancing women in science.

  7. 2017–2018

    Advising the Lords AI committee

She serves as Specialist Adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence from 2017 to 2018.

  8. As of October 2026

Professor and Home Office council member

Since October 2019, she is Professor of Artificial Intelligence in Cambridge's Department of Computer Science and Technology. She combines AI reasoning with machine learning to obtain explainable model predictions for applications in personalised cancer medicine and personalised tutoring; her projects develop explainability methods for deep learning, integrate symbolic approaches with neural machine learning for reasoning, and create human-adaptable knowledge representations. She joins the Home Office Science Advisory Council in June 2025 and coauthors the Leiden Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics in September 2026, which calls for action on AI's challenges to mathematics research. She is Group Lead of Mateja Jamnik’s Group at Cambridge’s CHIA. Since 2018, she has held an Associate Fellowship at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence.
