Masatsugu Kidode

Also known as 木戸出 正繼, 木戸出 正継, Masa Kidode

Masatsugu Kidode is a pattern recognition researcher and professor emeritus at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) whose work on high-speed local parallel image processors made him an IEEE Fellow in 2006. After graduate study in electrical engineering at Kyoto University, he worked as a Toshiba researcher from 1970 to 1999 and coauthored a 1983 paper on a battery-inspecting robot vision system built on the TOSPIX image processor. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 1994 for new architectures for pattern recognition. As a NAIST professor from 2000 to 2011, he co-chaired ISWC2005 in Osaka, the first International Symposium on Wearable Computers held in Asia, and served as president of the IEICE Information and Systems Society. His later papers cover reinforcement learning of a motor skill for wearing a T-shirt in 2013 and stereoscopic height estimation of volcanic ash plumes in 2024.

Timeline

  1. 1970

    Graduate study at Kyoto University

He completes graduate study in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Kyoto University's Graduate School of Engineering in March 1970.

  2. 1970–1999

    Toshiba and the TOSPIX processor

He joins Toshiba as a researcher in April 1970 and stays with the company until December 1999. In October 1983, he and five colleagues at the Information Systems Laboratory of Toshiba's Research and Development Center publish a Robotica paper on a robot vision system built on TOSPIX, a newly developed high-speed image processor. The system recognizes, inspects and positions dry batteries, then places good ones into a box.

  3. 1994

    An IAPR fellowship

The International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) names him a Fellow in 1994 for contributions to new architectures for pattern recognition and service to the IAPR. He also receives the Achievement Award of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) in 1994.

  4. 2000–2011

    Professor at NAIST

He becomes a professor in the Graduate School of Information Science at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in January 2000 and holds the post until March 2011. In 2006, he coauthors Ubiquitous Memories, a memory externalization system using physical objects, with Tatsuyuki Kawamura, Tomohiro Fukuhara, Hideaki Takeda and Yasuyuki Kono.

  5. 2003–2006

    IPSJ, IEICE and IEEE fellowships

He becomes a Fellow of the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ) in March 2003 and an IEICE Fellow in September 2004. In 2006, IEEE names him a Fellow for contributions to high-speed local parallel image processors.

  6. 2005–2007

    Co-chairing ISWC2005

He serves as president of the IEICE Information and Systems Society from 2005 to 2007. In October 2005, he and Eiji Shimizu of the Takarazuka University of Art and Design are general co-chairs of ISWC2005 in Osaka, the ninth International Symposium on Wearable Computers and the first held in Asia.

  7. 2011–2013

    Professor emeritus at NAIST

He becomes professor emeritus at NAIST in April 2011. In May 2013, he coauthors an Advanced Robotics paper with Takamitsu Matsubara and Daisuke Shinohara on reinforcement learning of a motor skill for wearing a T-shirt.

  8. 2024–2025

    Plume heights from SGLI imagery

In September 2024, he coauthors a paper with Souichiro Hioki, Takuya Funatomi, Makiko Nakata and Sonoyo Mukai on stereoscopic height estimation of biomass burning aerosol and volcanic ash plumes by the second-generation global imager (SGLI). In January 2025, he gives a eulogy at the memorial service for Shinji Tomita, the fourth president of the Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics (KCGI). He is a professor emeritus at NAIST and a former KCGI professor.
