Maria Antònia Martí is a computational linguist whose work built language resources for Catalan and Spanish. At the University of Barcelona, she earned a degree and doctorate in Romance Philology and developed an automated morphological analyzer for Catalan. She founded CLiC, coauthored AnCora-Verb, served as SEPLN president, and published on compositional distributional semantics; SEPLN recognized her career in 2022. Timeline

  1. 1973–1988

    Romance Philology at UB

She earns a degree in Romance Philology (Hispanic studies) at the University of Barcelona in 1973 and a PhD in Romance Philology there in 1988.

  2. 1988

    A Catalan morphological analyzer

In her 1988 thesis, she develops an automated morphological analyzer for Catalan. The system uses a finite-state automaton to segment words and assign morphological categories.

  3. 1990–1996

    President of SEPLN

From 1990 to 1996, she serves as president of the Sociedad Española para el Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural (SEPLN).

  4. 2008

    AnCora-Verb lexical resources

She coauthors the AnCora-Verb paper, which presents large Catalan and Spanish verbal lexicons for semantic annotation with arguments and thematic roles in the AnCora corpora.

  5. 2022

An ICDS paper and SEPLN recognition

At its 2022 congress, SEPLN recognizes her research career and contributions to the natural language processing community and identifies her as a University of Barcelona professor and CLiC founder. She coauthors a paper defining information-theory-based compositional distributional semantics and studying embedding, composition, and similarity functions.

  6. 2023

    Automatic morphosyntactic analysis

In 2023, she and Mariona Taulé contribute the chapter “Análisis morfosintáctico y sintáctico automático” to The Routledge Handbook of Spanish Syntax.

  7. 2025

    Honorary committee at CILG

At the 2025 International Congress of General Linguistics, she serves on its honorary committee as a University of Barcelona representative.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor emerita at UB

As of October 2026, she is professor emerita in UB's Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics. Her research area is computational linguistics.
