Majid Mirmehdi

Majid Mirmehdi is a computer vision researcher whose work spans parallel vision and health applications. He earned a PhD at City University in 1991 on parallelising vision algorithms, worked as a Research Fellow at Surrey's Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing, and became Bristol Lecturer in 1997 and Senior Lecturer in 2002. He chaired the British Machine Vision Association from 2005 to 2008, became an IAPR Fellow in 2010, has served as editor-in-chief at the Institution of Engineering and Technology since 2012, and was named a BMVA Distinguished Fellow in 2018. From 2018 to 2023, he served as co-investigator on Bristol's SPHERE2 project. As of October 2026, he is Professor of Computer Vision and Engineering Faculty Education Director at Bristol, leads SPHERE's Quality of Movement from Video work, and has coauthored CaMCheX, a 2026 multimodal transformer for chest X-ray classification.

Timeline

  1. 1991

    A PhD on parallel vision

He completes a PhD at City University in 1991 on the parallelisation of vision algorithms.

  2. By 2002

    Surrey and Bristol faculty

At Surrey's Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing, he works as a Research Fellow. Bristol appoints him Lecturer in its Department of Computer Science in 1997; he becomes Senior Lecturer in 2002.

  3. 2005–2008

    Chairing the BMVA

He chairs the British Machine Vision Association from 2005 to 2008 and serves on its Executive Committee.

  4. 2010

    An IAPR fellowship

IAPR elects him a Fellow in 2010 for contributions to image understanding and computer vision and service to the association.

  5. Since 2012

    Editor-in-chief at IET

He serves as editor-in-chief at the Institution of Engineering and Technology from 2012 onward.

  6. 2018

    A BMVA Distinguished Fellowship

The BMVA names him a Distinguished Fellow in 2018. His work moves from parallel computer vision and texture analysis to larger computer vision systems in medical settings.

  7. 2018–2023

    SPHERE2 co-investigator

    He serves as a co-investigator on Bristol's SPHERE2 project from 2018 to 2023.

  8. As of October 2026

    Bristol professor and CaMCheX

As of October 2026, he is Professor of Computer Vision and Engineering Faculty Education Director in Bristol's School of Computer Science. He is academic lead for SPHERE's Quality of Movement from Video work, where computer-vision algorithms use silhouettes to time transitions from sitting to standing. In 2026, he coauthors CaMCheX with Phillip Sloan and Edwin Simpson, a multimodal transformer that aligns multi-view chest X-ray studies with structured clinical data.
