M. Jorge Cardoso

Also known as Jorge Cardoso, Jorge M. Cardoso

M. Jorge Cardoso is a medical-imaging AI researcher and first author of the paper that describes MONAI, an open-source PyTorch-based framework for deep learning in healthcare. At University College London's Centre for Medical Image Computing he developed the STEPS and geodesic information flows methods, which won the 2015 UCL-CNT Early Career Investigator Award in Neuroimaging Techniques. By 2019 he was Chief Technical Officer of the London Medical Imaging & AI Centre for Value-Based Healthcare, which launched MONAI with NVIDIA in 2020, and King's promoted him to Reader in 2021. In 2022 he coauthored latent diffusion models for 3D brain MRI that produced a synthetic dataset of 100,000 images, and he is now Chief AI Officer and a founder of Hologen as well as a Reader in AI at King's College London.

Timeline

  1. 2015

    A UCL early-career award

He wins the UCL-CNT Early Career Investigator Award in Neuroimaging Techniques for 2015, recognizing his STEPS and geodesic information flows (GIF) methods from UCL's Centre for Medical Image Computing. Before King's, he is a Lecturer at UCL, Technical Lead of the Quantitative Radiology Initiative at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Engineering Lead of the Neuro-oncology Flagship Programme.

  2. 2017

    The generalised Dice loss

With Carole H. Sudre, Wenqi Li, Tom Vercauteren and Sébastien Ourselin, he coauthors a 2017 paper that proposes the class re-balancing properties of the Generalized Dice overlap as a deep-learning loss function for unbalanced segmentation tasks.

  3. 2019

CTO of the London AI Centre

The London Medical Imaging & Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value-Based Healthcare holds its opening event in 2019, and he presents its federated model for healthcare data access as Chief Technical Officer.

  4. 2020

    Launching the MONAI framework

In 2020, the London AI Centre and King's School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences launch the open-source MONAI framework with NVIDIA. As Chief Technology Officer of the London AI Centre, he says such a comprehensive tool was missing before MONAI.

  5. 2021

    Reader and synthetic brains

King's promotes him to Reader in Artificial Medical Intelligence in 2021. In July 2021, King's also unveils the Synthetic Brain Project on NVIDIA's Cambridge-1 supercomputer, which builds deep-learning models that synthesize artificial 3D brain MRI images, and he explains that Cambridge-1 has the computing power to train models of the size needed.

  6. 2022

    The MONAI framework paper

In September 2022, he coauthors a latent diffusion model for 3D brain MRI, trained on 31,740 T1-weighted MRI images from UK Biobank, and the team releases a synthetic dataset of 100,000 brain images. In November 2022, he is first author of the paper that introduces MONAI as a freely available, community-supported, consortium-led PyTorch-based framework for deep learning in healthcare.

  7. 2024

    Realistic synthetic brain images

In July 2024, King's reports that an AI model from its scientists, built with University College London on the Cambridge-1 supercomputer, produces three-dimensional synthetic brain images realistic and accurate enough for medical research. He is a Reader in the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences and says the team has taught a computer what the human brain looks like.

  8. As of October 2026

    Chief AI Officer at Hologen

He is Chief AI Officer and a founder of Hologen, a company rooted in University College London and King's College London, and a Reader in AI at King's. He moderates the panel on foundation models in medicine at NVIDIA's GTC Berlin Academic Experience at Charité in October 2026.
