Researcher

Lyle Norman Long

Also known as Lyle Long, Lyle N. Long

Lyle Norman Long is a Penn State aerospace engineer and AI researcher whose work spans neural networks, cognitive robotics, and massively parallel computing. He earned degrees in mechanical engineering at Minnesota and aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford, then worked at NASA and Lockheed before receiving the 1993 Gordon Bell Prize. He coauthored a 2010 method for continual neural learning through neurogenesis and synaptogenesis, and in 2016 explored emotion models for cognitive robots and human-level intelligence with massively parallel computers. As of October 2026, he is a professor of aerospace engineering and mathematics at Penn State.

Timeline

  1. 1976–1978

    Degrees at Minnesota and Stanford

He earns a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with distinction from Minnesota in 1976 and a Master of Science in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford in 1978.

  2. 1978–1983

    Research assistant at NASA

From 1978 to 1983, he works as a research assistant at NASA Ames Research Center in California and NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia.

  3. 1983–1989

    Research scientist at Lockheed

From 1983 to 1989, he serves as a senior research scientist at Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company.

  4. 1993

    A Gordon Bell Prize

In 1993, he receives the IEEE Computer Society Gordon Bell Prize for achieving the highest performance on a parallel computer.

  5. 2010

    Continual learning with neural networks

In 2010, he coauthors a computational method for continual learning that adds and removes neurons and synapses as the simulation runs.

  6. December 2016

    A talk on human-level intelligence

In December 2016, he presents a talk on approaches to human-level intelligence using massively parallel computers. His Penn State AI research models emotion in cognitive robots with mathematical models and the “happiness equation.”

  7. 2017

    Aerospace software engineering award

In 2017, he receives the AIAA Aerospace Software Engineering Award for modernizing aerospace engineering education and research.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Penn State

As of October 2026, he is a professor of aerospace engineering and mathematics at Penn State, with interests that include intelligent systems software and neural networks.
