Liang Jiang
Liang Jiang is a quantum information researcher whose work links neural-network decoding with quantum error correction. After a Sherman Fairchild postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech, he joined Yale's faculty as an assistant professor in 2012, became an associate professor, and received Sloan and Packard fellowships in 2013. His work includes a probabilistic neural-network decoder for stabilizer codes in 2017 and a 2018 study of error correction for Heisenberg-limited metrology under Markovian noise. He moved to the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering in 2019. There, he is a professor of molecular engineering; his group studies quantum control and error correction, and he is a co-investigator on an AI-guided quantum sensing project announced in October 2026.

Timeline
-
2004–2009
Caltech and Harvard degrees
He earns a BS from Caltech in 2004 and a PhD from Harvard University in 2009.
-
2012
Yale assistant professor
After a Sherman Fairchild postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech, he joins Yale's faculty as an assistant professor of applied physics in 2012 and becomes an associate professor of Applied Physics.
-
2013
Sloan and Packard fellowships
In 2013, he receives the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship while serving as an assistant professor of applied physics at Yale.
-
2017
A probabilistic decoder
In 2017, he and Stefan Krastanov coauthor a probabilistic neural-network decoder for stabilizer codes. The network calculates an error distribution conditioned on syndromes, then samples a predicted error.
-
2018
Quantum error correction in metrology
With Sisi Zhou, Mengzhen Zhang and John Preskill, he derives a necessary and sufficient condition in 2018 for quantum error correction to reach the Heisenberg limit under Markovian noise.
-
2019
Moving to Chicago
In 2019, he moves from Yale University to the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering as a professor.
-
October 2026
AI-guided quantum sensing
In October 2026, he is a co-investigator on an AI-guided quantum sensing project at UChicago.
-
As of October 2026
Professor of Molecular Engineering
He is a professor of molecular engineering at UChicago's Pritzker School as of October 2026. His group investigates quantum control and error correction for sensing, transduction, communication and computation.
