Michael Maire
Michael Maire is a computer vision researcher and a co-author of the Microsoft COCO paper, which introduced a dataset of everyday scenes aimed at advancing object recognition. He earned a PhD in computer science at UC Berkeley in 2009 and then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Caltech. He joined the University of Chicago in 2018 after serving as a research assistant professor at TTIC, and his colorization network, which learns in a self-supervised way, was presented at ECCV in 2016. The COCO paper received the Koenderink Prize at ECCV in 2024. As of October 2026, he is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago.
Timeline

2014
Co-authoring the COCO paper
He co-authors Microsoft COCO: Common Objects in Context, published by ECCV in September 2014. The paper presents a dataset of everyday scenes with 2.5 million labeled instances in 328k images, aimed at advancing object recognition.
-
2016
Automatic colorization at ECCV
A colorization network that he co-authors is presented at ECCV in 2016, learning to color images in a self-supervised way without human labeling effort.

2018
Joining UChicago computer science
Joining the University of Chicago's computer science department in 2018, he becomes an assistant professor after serving as a research assistant professor at TTIC.
-
2024
A Koenderink Prize for COCO
In 2024 the COCO paper, which Maire co-authors, receives the Koenderink Prize at ECCV.
