Lawrence J. Hubert
Also known as Lawrence Hubert, Larry Hubert
Lawrence Hubert is a psychologist and statistician whose work on cluster analysis includes the 1985 paper "Comparing partitions," written with Phipps Arabie, which describes the adjusted Rand index for comparing two clusterings. He earned a Stanford doctorate in 1971, published on hierarchical clustering in 1972 and 1976, and served as president of the Psychometric Society from 1983 to 1984 while at the University of California, Santa Barbara. With Arabie and other coauthors, he co-edited Clustering and Classification in 1996 and co-authored Combinatorial Data Analysis in 2001, and in 2008 he coauthored a paper on K-means clustering. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences elected him a foreign member in 2007, and the Psychometric Society gave him its Career Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2015. He is professor emeritus at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he is Lanier Professor of Psychology.

Timeline
-
1971–1976
Stanford PhD and clustering papers
He earns a doctorate at Stanford University in 1971, working under Patrick Suppes and Lee Cronbach. In 1972, he publishes "Some extensions of Johnson's hierarchical clustering algorithms" in Psychometrika, and in 1976, he and F. B. Baker publish a graph-theoretic approach to goodness-of-fit in complete-link hierarchical clustering in the Journal of the American Statistical Association.
-
1983–1984
President of the Psychometric Society
He serves as president of the Psychometric Society from 1983 to 1984, while at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His presidential address is titled "Statistical Applications of Linear Assignment."
-
1985
Comparing partitions
He and Phipps Arabie publish "Comparing partitions" in the Journal of Classification in 1985. The paper describes the adjusted Rand index, a version of the Rand index corrected for chance that is commonly used to compare a clustering algorithm's output with a reference clustering.
-
1996–2001
Two books on clustering
In 1996, he co-edits Clustering and Classification with Phipps Arabie and G. De Soete, published by World Scientific. In 2001, he co-authors Combinatorial Data Analysis: Optimization by Dynamic Programming with Arabie and J. Meulman, published by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
-
2007
Royal Netherlands Academy election
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences elects him a foreign member in 2007.
-
2008
Order-constrained K-means clustering
He and D. Steinley publish "Order-constrained solutions in K-means clustering" in Psychometrika in 2008.
-
2015
Psychometric Society career award
The Psychometric Society gives him its Career Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2015.
-
As of October 2026
