Lawrence J. Fogel
Also known as Lawrence Jerome Fogel
Lawrence Fogel devised evolutionary programming beginning in 1960, and his 1964 doctoral dissertation became the basis of the first book on evolutionary computation. His earlier electrical engineering degrees came from New York University in 1948 and Rutgers University in 1952. Decision Science, the San Diego company he helped found in 1965, was the first company to focus on solving real problems via evolutionary computation. He served as president of the American Society for Cybernetics in 1969 and founded Natural Selection in 1993. The IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award came to him in 2006, and he died in 2007.
