Kim L. Boyer
Kim L. Boyer is an electrical engineer and computer vision researcher whose interests span perceptual organization, graph theoretical methods and medical image analysis. After a Purdue BSEE and MSEE, he worked at Bell Laboratories and Comsat Laboratories, earned a Purdue PhD on 3-D robot vision under Avinash Kak in 1986, and spent 1986 to 2007 at Ohio State, where he directed the Signal Analysis and Machine Perception Laboratory. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a fellow in 2004 and elected him its president for 2012 to 2014. In August 2006, he took a one-year appointment as a Jefferson Science Fellow at the State Department; he became head of electrical, computer, and systems engineering at Rensselaer in January 2008 and founding dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Albany in July 2015.
Timeline
-
1976–1986
Purdue and 3-D robot vision
He earns a BSEE with distinction from Purdue University in 1976 and an MSEE in 1977. In 1986, he completes a Purdue PhD in electrical engineering with the dissertation "3-d Robot Vision: Acquisition and Interpretation," advised by Avinash Kak.
-
1977–1983
Bell Labs and Comsat Laboratories
He works at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey, from 1977 to 1981. From 1981 to 1983, he is with Comsat Laboratories in Clarksburg, Maryland.
-
1986–2007
Professor at Ohio State
He joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The Ohio State University in 1986 and stays until 2007. As a professor there, he directs the school's Signal Analysis and Machine Perception Laboratory.
-
2004
An IAPR fellowship
In 2004, the International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a fellow for contributions to computer vision and for service to IAPR.
-
2006–2007
Jefferson Science Fellow at State
In August 2006, he accepts a one-year appointment as a National Academies Jefferson Science Fellow at the U.S. Department of State. Working in Washington as Senior Science Advisor to the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, he advises on topics from biofuels to innovation and economic development in Latin America.
-
January 2008
Head of ECSE at Rensselaer
In January 2008, he joins Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as head of the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering, a post he holds for seven years. His research covers perceptual organization, graph theoretical methods and medical image analysis, including heart imaging to detect ventricular dyssynchrony.
-
2012–2014
President of the IAPR
At ICPR 2012 in Tsukuba, Japan, the IAPR Governing Board elects him president for the 2012–2014 term. In 2014, Ingela Nyström succeeds him, and he joins the 2014–2016 executive committee as past president.
-
July 2015
Founding dean at Albany
In July 2015, he becomes founding dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Albany, State University of New York. His later research estimates occupancy in smart spaces using color-controllable LED fixtures and low-cost color sensors. Purdue names him a 2018 Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineer.
