DeLiang Wang
Also known as De Liang Wang, Wang DeLiang
DeLiang Wang is a computer scientist whose work develops methods for separating speech from competing sounds. He studied at Peking University and the University of Southern California, then spent 1991–2025 at Ohio State on machine perception and auditory scene analysis. His work spans deep-learning methods, a book on computational auditory scenes, and supervised speech separation; he led the International Neural Network Society and edited the journal Neural Networks. Since July 2025, he has been Presidential Chair Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and he is a Fellow of IEEE, ISCA, and AAIA.

Timeline
-
1983–1991
From Beijing to Los Angeles
At Peking University, he earned a B.S. in 1983 and an M.S. in 1986, then completed a computer-science PhD at the University of Southern California in 1991. From 1986 to 1987, he worked as an assistant investigator at the Institute of Computing Technology, Academia Sinica, in Beijing.
-
1991–2025
An Ohio State career
After joining Ohio State in 1991, he worked in its Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Center for Cognitive and Brain Sciences through June 2025. His research used neural computation and deep neural networks to study auditory scene analysis.
-
2005–2006
Mapping auditory scenes
He published “The time dimension for scene analysis” in 2005 and co-edited the 2006 volume “Computational Auditory Scene Analysis: Principles, Algorithms, and Applications.” He served as president of the International Neural Network Society in 2006.
-
2014
Honored for machine listening
Ohio State recognized him with its 2014 Distinguished Scholar Award. His group developed methods for pitch tracking, dereverberation, singing voice separation, mask estimation, and localization-based separation.
-
2019
A paper on speech separation
His 2014 paper with Yuxuan Wang and Arun Narayanan, “On training targets for supervised speech separation,” received the IEEE Signal Processing Society’s 2019 Best Paper Award.
-
By 2025
Editing a research journal
He served as editor-in-chief of the journal Neural Networks from 2011 to 2025.
-
2025
A neural network award
He received the Neural Networks Pioneer Award from the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2025.
-
Since July 2025
A new school in Shenzhen
He is Presidential Chair Professor in the School of Data Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is a Fellow of IEEE, ISCA, and AAIA.
