Kazuhiko Yamamoto
Also known as 山本 和彦
Kazuhiko Yamamoto is a Japanese pattern-recognition researcher whose work includes character and writer recognition. He earned a master's degree at Tokyo Denki University in 1971, joined the Electrotechnical Laboratory, led its image research lab, and later held professorships at Tsukuba and Gifu. In 1992, he coauthored a method for recognizing laser-marked alphanumeric characters without binarization, and IAPR named him a Fellow in 1996 for character recognition and service. He became Professor Emeritus and a Fellow of Gifu University and director of Innointech Research Institute in 2010. He coauthored a 2018 paper on offline text-independent writer identification using a conditional autoencoder and served on IW-FCV's steering committee in 2024 as a Gifu University member.
Timeline
-
1971
Master's degree and ETL
He earns a master's degree at Tokyo Denki University Graduate School and joins the Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL) in 1971.
-
1979–1988
Maryland visit and image lab
In 1979, he becomes a visiting researcher at the University of Maryland. In 1988, he becomes head of ETL's Image Research Laboratory in its Intelligent Information Department.
-

Professor at Gifu
Gifu University appoints him professor in its Department of Applied Information Science, Faculty of Engineering, in 1995.
-
1996
An IAPR Fellowship
IAPR names him a Fellow in 1996 for contributions to character recognition and service to the association.
-
2010
Professor emeritus and director
He becomes Professor Emeritus and Fellow of Gifu University and director of Innointech Research Institute in 2010.
-
2018
Offline writer identification
A 2018 paper he coauthors studies offline text-independent writer identification with a writer-independent model using a conditional autoencoder.
-
2024
