Karim R. Lakhani
Karim Lakhani is a Harvard Business School professor who studies how analytics and artificial intelligence reshape companies and professional work. Trained at McMaster University and MIT, where he earned a PhD in management in 2006, he first studied open-source communities and innovation contests, and in 2009 he led the launch of the NASA Tournament Lab, the starting point of the Laboratory for Innovation Science at Harvard. With Marco Iansiti he wrote Competing in the Age of AI in 2020, and he co-founded the Digital Data Design Institute at Harvard, which took in his innovation lab in 2022. His field experiments with 758 Boston Consulting Group consultants in 2023 and 791 Procter & Gamble professionals in 2025 tested how generative AI changes knowledge work and teamwork. Today he is the Dorothy & Michael Hintze Professor of Business Administration and founding chair of the institute, now called the HBS AI Institute, and he joined Cloudflare's board in 2025.

February 2025
An AI course for every MBA
In February 2025, he and his colleagues launch Data Science and AI for Leaders (DSAIL), an AI-native course required for all 935 MBA students at Harvard Business School.
