Jyh‐Shing Roger Jang
Also known as Roger Jang, J.-S. Roger Jang, 張智星
Roger Jang is a computer scientist whose 1993 ANFIS paper joined fuzzy logic with neural-network learning. He earned his PhD under Lotfi Zadeh at UC Berkeley in 1992 and coauthored the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox for MATLAB at MathWorks. As a professor at National Tsing Hua University from 1995 and at National Taiwan University from 2012, he chaired the ISMIR music-retrieval conference in Taipei in 2014 and served as founding director of NTU's FinTech Research Center from 2018. He became chief technology officer of E.SUN Financial Holding in August 2020 and received the CIS Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award in 2025. He is E.SUN's chief technology officer and an adjunct professor at NTU.

Timeline
-
1984–1992
A Berkeley doctorate under Zadeh
He earns a B.S. in electrical engineering at National Taiwan University in 1984. In 1992 he completes a PhD at UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, where he works with Lotfi Zadeh on fuzzy logic and neural networks.
-
1993–1995
ANFIS and the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox
In 1993 he publishes the ANFIS paper in IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics; the network tunes membership functions by gradient descent and identifies output coefficients by least squares. From September 1993 to August 1995 he is a software engineer at MathWorks in Natick, Massachusetts, where he coauthors the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox for MATLAB.
-
1995–2012
Professor at Tsing Hua University
He joins the computer science department of National Tsing Hua University in 1995 and is a full professor there from 2009 until 2012. In 1997, Prentice Hall publishes Neuro-Fuzzy and Soft Computing, which he writes with Sun and Mizutani.
-
2004–2006
Karami karaoke at CWeb
He serves as chief technology officer of CWeb Technology in Taipei from 2004 to 2006. There he develops Karami, an online karaoke service that shows the singer's pitch in real time and scores the singing from its pitch progression, work that ties into his research on music analysis and retrieval.
-
2012–2025
Professor at National Taiwan University
He moves to the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Taiwan University as a professor in 2012 and holds the post until 2025. He is general chair of the ISMIR music information retrieval conference in Taipei in 2014 and general co-chair of ISMIR in Suzhou in 2017. He directs the IT office of NTU Hospital from 2017 to 2019 and is founding director of NTU's FinTech Research Center from 2018 to 2022.
-
August 2020
Chief technology officer at E.SUN
In August 2020 he becomes chief technology officer of E.SUN Financial Holding, on loan from NTU. In October 2021 he gives a talk at the Taiwan AI Academy forum, "The Beauty and Sorrow of AI Projects in Financial Scenes", on carrying AI projects in finance from design and modeling to implementation and maintenance.
-
2025
Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award
He receives the CIS Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award in 2025. National Taiwan University also gives him its Teaching Excellence Award for full-time faculty in 2025.
-
As of October 2026
E.SUN CTO and NTU adjunct professor
He is chief technology officer of E.SUN Financial Holding, where he focuses on implementing AI services for digital transformation, and since August 2025 an adjunct professor in NTU's CSIE department. In January 2025 he gives a keynote titled "Transforming Financial Services with AI: Applications, Challenges, and Future Directions" at the 9th Financial Technology and Natural Language Processing event.
