Junyu Dong
Also known as 董军宇
Junyu Dong is a computer-vision researcher at Ocean University of China who applies machine learning to ocean data and underwater imaging. He completed a PhD on photometric texture synthesis at Heriot-Watt University in 2003 and joined Ocean University of China in 2004. In 2017, he coauthored a paper that used LSTM networks to predict sea surface temperature, and he went on to coauthor the OUC underwater object detection dataset in 2020, the UWStereo stereo-matching dataset in 2024 and an Arctic sea ice forecasting network in 2025. He is a professor and Dean of the Faculty of Information Science and Technology there, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Intelligent Marine Technology and Systems.

Timeline
-
2003
A Heriot-Watt doctorate
He completes a PhD in 2003 in the Department of Computing and Electrical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, supervised by Mike Chantler. His subject is photometric texture synthesis.
-
2004
Joining Ocean University of China
He joins Ocean University of China in 2004. His research there covers ocean big data, machine learning and computer vision.
-
2015
A deep hashing network
In 2015, he coauthors A Deep Hashing Learning Network with Guoqiang Zhong, Pan Yang and Sijiang Wang. The paper builds a supervised hashing method on a deep convolutional neural network that learns hash codes and compact data representations together.
-
2017
LSTM forecasts of sea temperature
In 2017, he coauthors Prediction of Sea Surface Temperature using Long Short-Term Memory with Qin Zhang, Hui Wang, Guoqiang Zhong and Xin Sun. The paper makes one-week and one-month daily forecasts, reports accuracy on the coastal seas of China, and describes itself as the first attempt, to the authors' knowledge, to use a recurrent neural network for sea surface temperature prediction.
-
2020
The OUC underwater dataset
In 2020, he coauthors a benchmark paper with Long Chen, Huiyu Zhou and colleagues that introduces the OUC dataset for underwater object detection. The dataset carries bounding-box annotations and high-quality reference images, so researchers can study how underwater image enhancement affects detection.
-
2024
The UWStereo dataset
In 2024, he coauthors UWStereo: A Large Synthetic Dataset for Underwater Stereo Matching with Qingxuan Lv, Yuezun Li and others. The dataset holds 29,568 synthetic stereo image pairs across four underwater scenes, with dense disparity annotations.
-
2025
Forecasting Arctic sea ice
In 2025, he coauthors the Frequency-Compensated Network, or FCNet, with Jialiang Zhang, Feng Gao, Yanhai Gan and Qian Du. The dual-branch network forecasts daily Arctic sea ice concentration and is tested on a satellite-derived daily dataset.
-
As of October 2026
Dean and journal editor
He is a professor and the Dean of the Faculty of Information Science and Technology at Ocean University of China, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Intelligent Marine Technology and Systems. He has published more than 100 papers in major journals and conferences, among them IJCV, IEEE Transactions, ICCV, AAAI and IJCAI.
