Julius Busecke

Also known as Julius J. M. Busecke, Julius Johannes Marian Busecke

Julius Busecke is a physical oceanographer and open-source software engineer who builds cloud-native data infrastructure for climate science and machine learning teams. After a B.Sc. in Kiel in 2010, he earned a Ph.D. in physical oceanography at Columbia University in 2017 and worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton from 2017 to 2020. At Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, which he joined in 2020, he managed data and computing for the NSF LEAP-STC from October 2022 and led open research for m2lines at NYU from May 2023, both until March 2025. He co-authored ClimSim, a dataset for hybrid physics-ML climate emulation that won an outstanding paper award in the datasets and benchmarks track at NeurIPS 2023, and the Samudra ocean emulator published in 2025. He is a climate scientist and open-source software engineer in Brooklyn, New York, and an affiliate graduate faculty member at the University of Hawaii.

Timeline

  1. 2010–2017

    Ph.D. in oceanography at Columbia

He earns a B.Sc. in 2010 from Christian-Albrechts University and GEOMAR in Kiel, advised by Arne Biastoch. At Columbia University he completes an M.A. in 2012, an M.Phil in 2015 and a Ph.D. in physical oceanography in 2017, all under Arnold L. Gordon.

  2. 2017–2020

    Postdoc at Princeton

From 2017 to 2020, he is a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Geosciences at Princeton University.

  3. September 2020–November 2022

    Associate research scientist at Lamont

He joins Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in September 2020 as an associate research scientist, a post he holds until November 2022.

  4. October 2022–March 2025

Data and computing manager at LEAP

From October 2022 to March 2025, he manages data and computing for the NSF LEAP-STC at Columbia University, and from May 2023 to March 2025 he also leads open research for m2lines at NYU. His technical work centers on scalable, cloud-native data infrastructure for science and machine learning teams.

  5. November 2023

Pangeo and CMIP6 in the cloud

In November 2023, he is an invited speaker, with Charles Stern, at a Pangeo Showcase on transforming thousands of CMIP6 datasets to Zarr with Pangeo Forge. He is the creator of the xMIP package and a core maintainer of xGCM, Aerobulk-Python and the Pangeo-ESGF CMIP6 Zarrs.

  6. 2023

    ClimSim at NeurIPS 2023

He is one of the authors of ClimSim: A large multi-scale dataset for hybrid physics-ML climate emulation, which wins one of the two outstanding datasets and benchmark track paper awards at NeurIPS 2023, in the dataset category. The dataset consists of 5.7 billion pairs of multivariate input and output vectors from multi-scale climate simulations.

  7. 2025

    The Samudra ocean emulator

He co-authors Samudra: An AI Global Ocean Emulator for Climate, published in Geophysical Research Letters in 2025. The emulator of the ocean component of a state-of-the-art climate model is stable for centuries and 150 times faster than the original ocean model.

  8. As of October 2026

    Climate scientist and software engineer

His roles at LEAP, m2lines and Lamont-Doherty end in March 2025. As of October 2026, he is a climate scientist and open-source software engineer based in Brooklyn, New York, an affiliate graduate faculty member at the University of Hawaii since 2022, and looking for his next opportunity.
