Judith Uchidiuno
Also known as Judith Odili Uchidiuno
Judith Uchidiuno is a human-computer interaction researcher who designs learning technology and AI curricula for students in low-income and underserved communities. A Nigerian native, she studied computer science at Lincoln University and completed a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon in 2020, advised by Amy Ogan and Ken Koedinger. After a postdoctoral position at Carnegie Mellon, she joined Georgia Tech in 2023 and started the Play and Learn Lab, whose team co-designed a middle school AI curriculum for the AI4GA program; by May 2024, more than 1,500 students had learned AI through that work. In 2025, she gave a keynote at the SITE conference on co-designing AI instructional materials with students and teachers. She is an assistant professor in Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing and directs the Play and Learn Lab.
Timeline
-
By 2020
A Carnegie Mellon HCI PhD
A Nigerian native, she earns a bachelor's degree in computer science at Lincoln University just outside Philadelphia. She completes a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon's HCI Institute in 2020, advised by Amy Ogan and Ken Koedinger. Her research there contributes to a tablet-based learning system that over 500 students in rural Tanzania use to supplement formal education.
-
By 2023
Postdoc at the Robotics Academy
After her 2020 PhD, she works as a postdoctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Academy until Georgia Tech hires her in 2023. At Carnegie Mellon she begins working on AI4K12 under lead investigator Dave Touretzky, a National Science Foundation-funded effort to develop national K-12 guidelines for AI education.
-
2023
Assistant professor at Georgia Tech
She begins as an assistant professor in Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing in 2023. There she starts the Play and Learn Lab, hires two research assistants devoted to AI4GA, and sets out to work with informal learning centers in urban Atlanta to widen access to computer science education.
-
May 2024
The AI4GA middle school curriculum
Her team works with more than a dozen Atlanta-based schools to develop an AI curriculum for Artificial Intelligence for Georgia (AI4GA), and by May 2024 over 1,500 students have learned AI through the work over three years. Through Georgia Tech's BridgeUP STEM Program, she works with high school students to design video games that demonstrate their knowledge of AI. The curriculum and teacher training are publicly available.
-
2025
AI co-design papers and a keynote
In 2025, she coauthors "From Lecture Hall to Homeroom: Co-Designing an AI Elective with Middle School CS Teachers" for the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education and "Escape or D13: Understanding Youth Perspectives of AI through Educational Game Co-design" for the CHI conference. She also gives the SITE 2025 keynote "Improving the Efficacy of AI Instructional Materials via Co-Design with Students and Instructors", which draws on AI games and materials co-designed with teachers and students and implemented across 9 diverse schools in the US.
-
July 2025
Training teachers in four states
By July 2025, eighty teachers from four states have completed intensive training in teaching AI to middle schoolers through AI4GA, a program now supported by Google. The curriculum they learn was co-designed with educators and faculty, including her.
-
As of October 2026
Directing the Play and Learn Lab
She is an assistant professor in Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing and directs the Play and Learn Lab. Her projects include co-designing AI literacy games with high school students, building an AI curriculum with middle school CS teachers across multiple U.S. states, and developing CS professional development and curriculum used by more than 600 teachers across West Africa. The National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, Google and NCWIT support her research.
