Juan M. Corchado

Juan Manuel Corchado is a computer scientist whose work connects multi-agent AI, bioinformatics and smart-territory systems. Born in Salamanca, he completed a computer-science doctorate there in 1998 with a thesis on AI-based multi-agent prediction. He also holds a doctorate in artificial intelligence from the University of the West of Scotland and helped establish BISITE in 2000, a research group in bioinformatics, intelligent systems and educational technology. From 2013 to 2017, he served as Salamanca's vice-rector for research; in 2021, he coauthored a paper about Deepint.net, a platform for smart territories. A 2024 report concluded that he and close collaborators systematically manipulated his academic record, a finding he disputed; as of October 2026, he is rector of the University of Salamanca.

    A computer-science doctorate

    In 1998, he completes a doctorate in computer science at the University of Salamanca with a thesis on multi-agent artificial intelligence for real-time predictions and complex series. He also holds a doctorate in artificial intelligence from the University of the West of Scotland.

    Building the BISITE group

    In 2000, he helps establish BISITE at the University of Salamanca, a research group for bioinformatics, intelligent systems and educational technology. His projects include artificial intelligence and machine learning.

  4. 2013–2017

    Vice-rector for research

    From 2013 to 2017, he serves as vice-rector for Research and directs the University of Salamanca's Science Park.

  5. 2021

    Deepint.net for smart territories

    In 2021, he coauthors an article introducing Deepint.net, a platform for smart territories. It applies AI methods such as classification, clustering, forecasting and optimization to data from IoT sensors and databases.

  6. 2024

    Research-ethics report

    In 2024, a report prepared at the request of Spain's Committee on Research Ethics concludes that Corchado and close collaborators systematically manipulated his academic record. He says the attributed actions are not criminal.

  7. Since 2024

    Rector of Salamanca

    He becomes rector of the University of Salamanca in 2024 for a six-year term after winning the rector election. As of October 2026, he remains rector and a full professor in computer science and artificial intelligence.
