Juan José Villanueva
Also known as Juan Jose Villanueva, Juan José Villanueva Pipaón
Juan José Villanueva is a computer vision researcher whose career links video analysis, human behavior, and technology transfer. He earned an informatics doctorate at UAB in 1981, helped found the Computer Vision Center, and coauthored the 2002 presentation of ELCVIA, a journal for computer vision and image analysis. The IAPR named him a Fellow in 2004, and he coordinated HERMES, which used computer vision and artificial intelligence to recognize and predict human behavior from video. At the February 2024 presentation of The BrAIn Roads, he described the CVC's research philosophy as basic science connected to society's needs; as of October 2026, he is an honorary professor in UAB's Department of Computer Science.

Timeline
-
1981
An informatics doctorate
He earns a doctorate in informatics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 1981.
-
1995
Founding the Computer Vision Center
The Generalitat de Catalunya and UAB establish the Computer Vision Center (CVC) in 1995 for computer-vision research and development. Villanueva helps found the center and serves as its director.
-
2002
Launching ELCVIA
In 2002, he coauthors “Presentation of ELCVIA” with Horst Bunke, introducing the electronic journal as a forum for computer vision and image analysis researchers.
-
2004
An IAPR fellowship
The IAPR names him a Fellow in 2004 for contributions to research and the transfer of innovation and technology in computer vision.
-
December 2009
Coordinating HERMES
In December 2009, he coordinates HERMES, a European project that uses computer-vision and artificial-intelligence algorithms to recognize and predict human behavior from video and describe it in natural language. He is an emeritus professor in UAB's Department of Computer Science and a former CVC director after 14 years in the role.
-
December 2012
CVC technology transfer
At a December 2012 visit to the CVC, he is its former director. Its open innovation model uses computer-vision research and development to transfer knowledge and add value for industry and society.
-
February 2024
The BrAIn Roads documentary
At the February 2024 presentation of The BrAIn Roads, a documentary about the CVC's self-driving vehicle project, he speaks as the center's founding director and a UAB emeritus professor. He describes the CVC's philosophy as basic science that reaches society and includes its needs.
