John Deller

Also known as Jack Deller, John R. Deller Jr.

John Deller, known as Jack, is an electrical engineer and speech processing researcher whose work applied statistical signal processing to speech recognition, language identification and speech watermarking. After degrees from Ohio State and the University of Michigan, where he earned a PhD in biomedical engineering in 1979, he became lead author of the 1993 textbook Discrete-Time Processing of Speech Signals, which includes chapters on the hidden Markov model and the artificial neural network. His six years as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine earned him the IEEE Signal Processing Society's 1997 Meritorious Service Award, and his tutorial "Tom, Dick, and Mary Discover the DFT" won the magazine's 1998 Best Paper Award. At Michigan State's Speech Processing Laboratory, he worked with MIT Lincoln Laboratory on Gaussian mixture model language identification in 2002 and on speech watermarking and spoken-document retrieval for the National Gallery of the Spoken Word. An IEEE Fellow, he is an emeritus professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State University.

Timeline

  1. 1974–1979

Degrees at Ohio State and Michigan

He earns a BS in electrical engineering, summa cum laude, from Ohio State University in 1974. At the University of Michigan, he completes an MS in biomedical engineering in 1975, an MS in electrical and computer engineering in 1976 and a PhD in biomedical engineering in 1979.

  2. 1993

    A speech processing textbook

In 1993, Macmillan publishes Discrete-Time Processing of Speech Signals, which he writes as lead author with John G. Proakis and John H. L. Hansen. The book covers speech analysis, coding, enhancement and recognition, with chapters on dynamic time warping, the hidden Markov model, language modeling and the artificial neural network; IEEE Press reissues it in 2000.

  3. 1997–1998

    Six years as magazine editor

He receives the IEEE Signal Processing Society's 1997 Meritorious Service Award for six years as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. His tutorial paper "Tom, Dick, and Mary Discover the DFT" wins the magazine's Best Paper Award in 1998.

  4. 1999

    A microcontroller signal processing book

In 1999, Prentice Hall publishes Digital Signal Processing and the Microcontroller, which he writes with Dale Grover of Red Cedar Electronics; the book teaches digital filters and the FFT on microcontrollers for embedded systems. He is a professor of electrical engineering at Michigan State University, where he coordinates the Communications and Signal Processing Research Laboratories and the related curriculum.

  5. 2002–2003

    Language identification and watermarking

In 2002, with MIT Lincoln Laboratory's Information Systems Technology Group, he coauthors language identification papers on Gaussian mixture model tokenization and on Gaussian mixture models with shifted delta cepstral features. His Speech Processing Laboratory also develops secure watermarking algorithms for the National Gallery of the Spoken Word, an NSF Digital Libraries II Initiative, and publishes speech watermarking work with Aparna Gurijala in 2003.

  6. By 2003

    IEEE Fellow and Millennium Medal

By 2003, he is an IEEE Fellow and a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State University, where he directs the Speech Processing Laboratory. He also receives the IEEE Millennium Medal for contributions to signal-processing education.

  7. 2005

    Spoken document retrieval and genomics

In 2005, he coauthors "SpeechFind: Advances in spoken document retrieval for a National Gallery of the Spoken Word" with John H. L. Hansen and others in IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing. His lab also presents a learning framework for detecting remote non-coding RNA homologies at the 2005 Intelligent Systems for Computational Biology conference in Detroit.

  8. By 2022

    Emeritus professor at Michigan State

By 2022, he is an emeritus professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State University. His research covers statistical signal processing for speech and hearing, genomics and other areas of biomedicine, and he has written or co-written three textbooks.
