Jin H. Kim

Also known as Jin-Hyung Kim, Jin Hyung Kim, Kim Jin-hyung, 김진형

Jin H. Kim is a computer scientist whose work spans causal reasoning, handwriting recognition and AI policy. He earned a doctorate at UCLA in 1983 and coauthored an IJCAI paper on causal and diagnostic reasoning; with Sung-Bae Cho, he combined hidden Markov models and a multilayer perceptron for handwriting recognition in 1995. The International Association for Pattern Recognition made him a fellow in 2000, and he led KIISE as its president in 2005 before becoming founding director of KAIST's Software Policy Research Center in 2014. In 2023, he argued that data and open source were central to hyper-scale AI; as of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus of computer science at KAIST.

Timeline

  1. 1983

    A UCLA doctorate

He receives a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1983.

  2. 1983

    Causal and diagnostic reasoning

With Judea Pearl, he presents A Computational Model for Causal and Diagnostic Reasoning in Inference Systems at IJCAI in 1983. Its representation updates belief in top-down causal and bottom-up diagnostic modes and allows multiple causes for one manifestation.

  3. 1995

    A hybrid HMM/MLP recognizer

He and Sung-Bae Cho publish An HMM/MLP Architecture for Sequence Recognition in Neural Computation in 1995. The hybrid uses an MLP classifier to classify likelihood values inside an HMM and is tested on online handwritten characters.

  4. 2000

    An IAPR fellowship

The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a fellow in 2000 for contributions to recognition of handwritten oriental scripts.

  5. 2005

    President of KIISE

He serves as the 20th president of the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers in 2005.

  6. January 2014

    Leading KAIST's software policy center

KAIST appoints him founding director of its new Software Policy Research Center in January 2014, for a three-year term. The center studies software policy, statistics and new software technology.

  7. February 2023

    Data and open-source AI

In February 2023, he says the quantity of data matters most for hyper-scale AI and urges Korean companies to build services quickly on open source to join the ecosystem.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor emeritus at KAIST

As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus of computer science at KAIST.
