Jin Guo
Also known as Jin L.C. Guo
Jin Guo is an associate professor at McGill University's School of Computer Science whose work spans software engineering, human-computer interaction and applied machine learning. After image processing and computer vision research at Fuji Xerox, she completed a PhD at the University of Notre Dame; her 2017 ICSE paper applied deep learning to software traceability, and her TiQi natural language interface won the ASE 2017 Best Tool Paper award. She joined McGill in January 2018, won an ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award at ICSE 2018 for "Traceability in the Wild," coauthored the ArguLens framework in 2020, and received a 2021 Sloan Foundation grant to study open source scientific software usability. In 2023, she coauthored DocML for model-card documentation at CHI, and her SUMMIT tool for summarizing open source issue discussions won best paper and methods recognition awards at CSCW 2023. Since June 2026, she is Associate Director, Research at McGill's Computational and Data Systems Institute, and she is an associate member at Mila.

Timeline
-
2016
A thesis proposal at ICSE
After working on image processing and computer vision in the research lab at Fuji Xerox, she presents her thesis proposal, "Ontology Learning and its Application in Software-Intensive Projects," at the ICSE 2016 Doctoral Symposium in Austin. She goes on to complete her PhD at the University of Notre Dame.

2017
Deep learning for trace links
Her paper with Jinghui Cheng and Jane Cleland-Huang, "Semantically Enhanced Software Traceability Using Deep Learning Techniques," is accepted to ICSE 2017. It uses word embeddings and a recurrent neural network to generate trace links, and its Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit model outperforms the Vector Space Model and Latent Semantic Indexing. Her tool demo paper on TiQi, a natural language interface for querying software project data, wins the ASE 2017 Best Tool Paper award.
-
2018
Assistant professor at McGill
She joins the School of Computer Science at McGill University as an assistant professor in January 2018. Her paper "Traceability in the Wild: Automatically Augmenting Incomplete Trace links," written with Michael Rath, Jacob Rendall, Jane Cleland-Huang and Patrick Mäder, wins an ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award at ICSE 2018.
-
2019–2020
NSERC, ArguLens and FRQNT
In June 2019, her proposal "Knowledge Enhanced Software Repository Search" receives an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement, and she serves as Program Co-Chair for the ACM Student Research Competition at ASE 2019. In 2020, she coauthors ArguLens, an automated technique using an argumentation model to consolidate community opinions in open-source issue discussions, and the FRQNT New Academics program funds her proposal "Document Traceability for Machine Learning Models."
-
2021
Sloan grant for scientific software
In August 2021, McGill announces that she receives $382,020 from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's Better Software for Science program for her proposal to study and improve the usability of open source scientific software through early user engagement.
-
2023
DocML, SUMMIT and CSCW awards
In 2023, she coauthors a CHI paper on DocML, a tool that nudges data scientists to complete ethics and model-card documentation during model development. Her SUMMIT paper, written with Saskia Gilmer, Avinash Bhat, Shuvam Shah, Kevin Cherry and Jinghui Cheng, wins best paper and methods recognition awards at CSCW 2023. SUMMIT is a tool for summarizing open source issue discussions that uses techniques to automatically detect information types and summarize text.

2024–2025
Human-centered AI at Mila
In May 2024, she and Ian Arawjo organize a Human-Centered AI Reading Group at the Mila Quebec AI Institute, where she is an associate academic member with research topics in human-AI interaction, privacy and responsible AI. Also in 2024, she is principal investigator for "Inclusive co-design of AI systems," a CDSI Proof-of-Concept Interdisciplinary Research Development Award project. In January 2025, she takes a sabbatical leave at the University of Toronto, visiting Shurui Zhou.

Since June 2026
Associate Director at CDSI
In June 2026, McGill's Computational and Data Systems Institute names her Associate Director, Research, to coordinate its research initiatives in artificial intelligence, data science and computing across McGill. She is an associate professor at the School of Computer Science and an associate member at Mila whose work spans software engineering, human-computer interaction and applied machine learning. In July 2026, she receives funding through the NSERC Discovery Grants program.
