Researcher

Jens Rittscher

Jens Rittscher is an Oxford professor who applies computer vision and statistical learning to biomedical imaging and computational pathology. After earning an Oxford DPhil in 2001, he led GE Global Research's Computer Vision Laboratory before joining Oxford as a Senior Research Fellow in 2013. At Oxford, he became a professor and research-group leader, chaired the IEEE ISBI Steering Committee, and co-founded Ground Truth Labs. His 2025 AdaFusion work combined pathology foundation models, and his 2026 GenST paper predicted spatial gene expression from histology; as of October 2026, he is Professor of Engineering Science at Oxford and leads the £5 million 3DxN imaging and AI programme.

Timeline

  1. 2001

    Oxford DPhil and Bonn diploma

He earns an Oxford DPhil in 2001 for research on human motion recognition under Andrew Blake. During his doctoral studies, he works in Oxford's Visual Dynamics Group as a Marie Curie Fellow; he also holds a Diploma in Mathematics and Computer Science from Bonn.

  2. By 2013

    GE and Rensselaer roles

At GE Global Research, he joins in 2001 after his DPhil and leads the Computer Vision Laboratory in Niskayuna before taking a Senior Research Fellow appointment at Oxford in 2013. Before Oxford, he also holds an adjunct assistant professorship at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. His work combines computer vision, probabilistic modelling and statistical learning across video annotation, visual surveillance, and biomedical imaging.

  3. 2013–2018

    Oxford professorship and group

Oxford appoints him Senior Research Fellow in 2013 through a joint appointment between its Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Nuffield Department of Medicine. He becomes Professor of Engineering Science in 2014 and group leader at the Oxford Big Data Institute in 2018.

  4. 2018–2021

    IEEE and EPSRC leadership

He chairs the IEEE ISBI Steering Committee from 2018 to 2020 and joins the UK EPSRC Healthcare Technologies Strategic Advisory Team in 2021.

  5. 2019

    Founding Ground Truth Labs

In 2019, he co-founds Ground Truth Labs to commercialise computational-pathology research from his laboratory. He serves as its co-founder and CSO.

  6. 2024–2027

    Charité visiting fellowship

In May 2024, Stiftung Charité awards him a visiting fellowship funded through 2027. A planned Charité working group brings Oxford and Berlin researchers together to combine imaging methods for disease diagnosis, classification, and prognosis.

  7. 2025

    AdaFusion pathology models

In 2025, he coauthors AdaFusion, a prompt-guided method that adaptively combines information from multiple pathology foundation models. Its evaluations span treatment-response prediction, tumour grading, and spatial gene-expression inference.

  8. 2026

    GenST predicts spatial expression

In 2026, he coauthors GenST, a generative cross-modal method that predicts spatial transcriptomics from histology images by aligning latent spaces for the two modalities. The paper appears in the Proceedings of the MICCAI Workshop on Computational Pathology.

  9. As of October 2026

    Oxford professor and 3DxN lead

He is Professor of Engineering Science and a Professorial Research Fellow at Oxford, with a joint appointment between the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and the Nuffield Department of Medicine. In 2026, he leads the £5 million 3DxN programme to combine three-dimensional tissue imaging, gene-expression analysis, and AI for new insights into health and disease.
