Jason Reed
Jason Reed is a computer scientist and research software engineer whose work connects formal proof systems with AI-assisted mathematics. He published research on proof irrelevance and hybrid logical frameworks, and completed a computer science PhD under Frank Pfenning at Carnegie Mellon in 2009. Through Lean FRO, he recruited for a collaborative mathematical workbench in August 2025 and led interface-tool work at a National Academies event in July 2026; Lean Workbench offers browser access to Lean and Verso Blueprint projects with AI preconfigured. As of October 2026, he is a Principal Research Software Engineer at Lean FRO.
Timeline
-
2003
Higher-order unification for proof irrelevance
In 2003, he publishes Extending Higher-Order Unification to Support Proof Irrelevance, a paper on proof irrelevance.
-
2004
Redundancy elimination for LF
At LFM 2004, he presents Redundancy Elimination for LF.
-
2006
Hybridizing a logical framework
In 2006, he publishes Hybridizing a Logical Framework.
-
2007
Intuitionistic labelled deduction
In 2007, he coauthors Intuitionistic Letcc via Labelled Deduction with Frank Pfenning.
-
2009
PhD and constraint simplification
In August 2009, he completes a PhD in computer science at Carnegie Mellon under Frank Pfenning, with a dissertation on a hybrid logical framework for stateful deductive systems. His 2009 LFMTP paper is Higher-Order Constraint Simplification in Dependent Type Theory.
-
August 2025–July 2026
A collaborative Lean workbench
In August 2025, he announces Lean FRO funding for a mathematical workbench where mathematicians collaborate through familiar informal writing with Lean's rigor and correctness guarantees, and recruits for its Literate Programming and Next Generation UX work. At the National Academies event in July 2026, he leads a Lean FRO team building next-generation interface tools for easier entry, teaching and web collaboration. He builds Lean Workbench as a zero-install browser workspace for Lean and Verso Blueprint projects with AI preconfigured; Lean checks AI-generated proofs.
