Jason Matheny

Also known as Jason Gaverick Matheny

Jason Matheny is a national security policy figure whose career moves between intelligence research, AI policy and think-tank work. He was named director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity in August 2015, and he co-chaired the task force that authored the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan, released in October 2016. Congress appointed him to the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence in 2018, and he became founding director of Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology in February 2019. In March 2021 he took three White House technology posts, and he is president and CEO of the RAND Corporation, a post that began in July 2022.

    Art history at Chicago

    The University of Chicago awards him a Bachelor of Arts in art history in 1996.

  2. 2009

    Forecasting work at IARPA

    In 2009 he joins IARPA, helping to grow programs on forecasting geopolitical events.

  3. August 2015

    Director of IARPA

    He is named director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity in August 2015.

  4. 2016

    Co-chairing the national AI plan

    A task force he co-chairs authors the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan, released by the White House in October 2016.

  5. 2018–2019

    An AI commission and a center

    Congress appoints him to the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence in 2018. He becomes founding director of the new Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown in February 2019, a center that will deliver nonpartisan analysis and advice on AI and other emerging technologies.

  6. March 2021–June 2022

    Three White House technology posts

    Three White House technology posts follow in March 2021, including deputy director for national security at the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

  7. March 2024

    A RAND Q&A on AI

    In a March 2024 RAND Q&A, he describes AI as a general-purpose technology with broad applications.

  8. Since 2022

    President and CEO of RAND

    He is president and CEO of the RAND Corporation, a post that began in July 2022.
